Best stuff to keep sites from jacking my system

So before I reformatted I was using the free version of Avast to let me know if any particular site was trying to call home with anything malicious. I figured I would take this time to find the latest and greatest stuff to protect my MBP at minimal cost. Does anyone have recommendations? Thanks.

You had it right with Avast, per Consumer Reports. Avast and AVG are both rated tops for free antivirus software for Macs.
