Frustrated today
Posted by: davemchine

Putting on my old man pants. There was a day when Apple made products that worked. Maybe they didn't have as many features as Windows but what they did worked well. Now everything is a struggle. Just getting music to play thru my house is unreliable and difficult. I feel like a grumpy old man today. Maybe I'll go spin some vinyl.

Ukulele music I couldn't find anywhere else.

"Alexa, play music everywhere"

Although that isn't without it's own setup struggles. But it wasn't hard and has worked ever since.

I agree. My latest issue is the fingerprint reader often takes 30+ seconds to be usable after my MBP wakes from sleep.

MAVIC, I could make a very long list of things that don't work anymore. I'm sure you could also. If it's not related to the iPhone it doesn't seem to get any attention.

One of my many gripes is where did the error messages go? Now when something doesn't work it just...doesn't work. No indication of what the problem might be which makes it very difficult to troubleshoot.

A very keen observation, one I myself have made many times in recent years.

I think two of the driving forces behind these changes are:

- a new generation of Apple OS developers who were never exposed to and do not share the same devotion to design excellence that the original generation of developers had.
- Apple's realization that the majority of Mac users today are Windows switchers who, because of their collective Microsoft/PC experience, have much lower expectations of the company and its products than original Mac users have.

It is what it is.

No problems here, Dave. In fact, AirPlay 2 provides exact synchronization from all speakers—works like a charm!

AirPlay: It just works.

So... this is only a rants only forum now ;)

Sorry, but we have 4 iMacs (well 5 really, 2007-2014), 2 MBPs (2012s), 3 iPads (newer), 4 iPhones (SE-XR), 3 AWs (0s and a 4), 2 wireless printers (new epson and old brother) and 2 airpods... with various BT speakers around the house (mostly anker). Everything wireless. No ethernet. about a 2000 SF house. Single story.

All of them work *exactly* as we expect, everyday. My oldest yells "hey siri" all damn day.

Sure, my teenagers like to complain every time it takes longer than 10 seconds for a web site to load... but otherwise... meh. It just works.

Is complaining about an issue you encountered without providing details helpful? Are you interested in finding the causes of (and hopefully solutions to) your problems?

Got FileVault turned on?

I've seen this a many times with FileVault enabled Macs.

If you have a 2016 MacBook Pro, it's not using a T2 chip for encryption and it takes forever to wake.

If you have a 2018 or later, it's using the T2 chip for hardware-encryption and it wakes within a second or two.

I think it's just that Tim Cook is no Steve Jobs. Cook is a money guy and the priority for Apple now is to make shareholders happy. That's it.

Can be slow unlocking from your Apple Watch, too.

As for music - we are enjoying using a google assistant to control google play music on our main audio system tied to the TV.

We will have an iTunes server, too, with our ancient mp3 library. That STILL works.

Comparing today to the "old days" is just impossible. Think about all of the technologies that did not exist back in the "good old days":iDevices, Wifi, Airplay, the internet, smart houses, streaming services, etc etc etc. Today's developers have a million more things to worry about that developers for OS 7, 8 or 9.

Someone above lamented that Windows offers so many more "features" than OS X, which is why it's always had its fair share of bugs. It us users that have demanded that more features be added to OS X and the need for computers in everything.

I don't adopt every new available technology if I don't absolutely need it. Why would I need a fingerprint scanner to wake my laptop? Smart light bulbs? Nope. Smart appliances? Nope. Wireless ear buds? Nope.

There are things I do use a hundred times a day and I adore them. My AppleWatch, Apple Pay, AirPlay, streaming of anything to my TV or car stereo. They absolutely "just work".

To me, "the good old days" refers to the Snow Leopard era. That version of OS X handled all the technologies above just fine, with perhaps the exception of smart houses -- better than any of its predecessors, in fact.

IIRC, it was the very next release of OS X in which Apple began the process of integrating connectivity to third-party social media at the OS level. IMHO, this was their first misstep; things have only gotten worse from there.

I don't recall a hue and cry from Mac users lamenting the lack of features in OS X... because there wasn't one. It is Apple that has been insistent upon adding feature after feature to the OS -- many of which, IMHO, have been added simply for the sake of change.

It is what it is.
