How...? An octopus caught a bald eagle in a death grip.

A team of salmon farmers are feeling pretty proud after they were able to rescue a bald eagle from an octopus off the northwest tip of Canada's Vancouver Island.

The group was returning to their float house when they heard screeching and splashing sounds last Monday, according to salmon farmer John Ilett.

After investigating the sounds, Ilett said the team found "a full-sized eagle submerged in the water with a big giant octopus in the water trying to drag it down.

"Illett has been reading comments on social media discussing whether or not his team should have intervened and said it's a different feeling when you're watching the situation unfold in front of your own eyes.

"Am I at fault because I'm human and I felt compassion for the bird?" he said. "At the end of the day both animals are alive and well and they went their separate ways and we feel pretty good about what we did."

I wouldn't mess with an octopus. They've got something like eight arms!

Makes me wonder why Mr. Eagle didn't use its powerful beak to teach Mr. Octopus a lesson.

That's only the beginning... They have about 270 suckers per arm, and they can taste with all of them. Truly they are alien intelligence right here on Earth, and when we learn to communicate with them then we might stand a chance of communicating with interstellar aliens.

The key to communicating with octopus could be found in color rather than in sound:

Nature on PBS had a very good episode recently on the octopus. The longest lived species only live up to 5 years. If you don't have a PBS passport, see if you can access it through your cable subscription.

Nature
Octopus: Making Contact
Season 38 Episode 1

"The octopus is the closest we may get to meeting an alien. They evolved from a common cousin more than 500 million years ago, but are also intelligent creatures with proven problem-solving abilities. So what happens when you invite an eight-legged alien into your living room? This documentary follows marine biologist David Scheel as he tracks his evolving relationship with his own octopus. "

Octopus: "You have entered my domain now, bird!"

My thought exactly! I highly doubt the octopus stealthily climbed a tree, caught the eagle, and then dragged it into the water. Also the octopus seemed to be more generally curious about the eagle than trying to drown or consume it. If you've never seen an octopus catch and eat a crab, trust me, they do not play around or waste any time at all once the target has been acquired.

Furthermore, I wonder if the fishermen would have saved the octopus from the eagle if the fight had occurred on a tree branch above the water?

They may in fact prove to be an alien life form.

Which is why Watchmen is creeping me out.

I'm on Episode 4 or so where Glass is getting visitors at the end.

Makes me wonder why Mr. Eagle didn't use its powerful beak to teach Mr. Octopus a lesson.

Ock probably got some scratches and gashes in the struggle, but Eagle 1 was probably too busy trying to escape drowning. Swooping down to pluck a fish out of water is one thing. Being dragged under - a whole new WTF experience.

I highly doubt the octopus stealthily climbed a tree, caught the eagle, and then dragged it into the water.

You might have a point. More likely the eagle was going for a fish, and Ock was either going for the same fish, or just in the neighborhood and decided to check it out.

Also the octopus seemed to be more generally curious about the eagle than trying to drown or consume it.

Or maybe it was a little put off by the claws and the amount of resistance, normally seen by Ock as nonexistent or futile, at best.

Furthermore, I wonder if the fishermen would have saved the octopus from the eagle if the fight had occurred on a tree branch above the water?

Curious.

I wouldn't.

And eagle plucking fish out of water is in its elements- sea, land, and air.

Tree octopi? Not so much. And I'd be truly, really creeped out if that happened.

Anyway, they're choice. That's why I don't participate in making animal documentaries (not that it's ever come up). I'd be way too judgmental and interfering.

"At the end of the day both animals are alive and well and they went their separate ways and we feel pretty good about what we did."

And so they should.

The naysayers that objected can stand by and let nature take its course and feel pretty good about that.

Grilled octopus is excellent, very unlike squid which feels like you're chewing on a piece of a tire.

I haven't tried grilled octopus but octopus ceviche (cooked chemically with lime/lemon juice and herbs) is divine!

Perhaps the eagle shouldn't have been singing Beatles songs. It might have come across to the octopus as an invitation:
"I'd like to be
under the sea
in an octopus's garden
in the shade"

I like octopus, too, but I stopped eating it a few years ago after watching a special about how intelligent they are, and esp since killing them often involved whacking them against cement. Seemed very cruel. I have been sticking to squid. (But, yes, I still eat most other animals.)

I similarly wrestled with the moral implications of eating octopus, but I wound up justifying it by reminding myself that:

A. I didn't know the octopus I was eating personally.

B. The restaurant where I got it prepared a large bowl of octopus ceviche every day (probably several because it was a good seller when it was only available as part of a sampler platter but now it's available as an entree as well) and whether or not I had a serving every two or three weeks didn't affect how much they prepared daily at all.

Would I go out specifically looking to catch, prepare, and eat an octopus? Almost certainly not, but if it's already on the menu...
