My trusty and rusty '02 Civic is being retired for my mom's Subaru Impreza Wagon. Because Mom doesn't drive any more.

The civic needs front brake lines. And a new windshield. And maybe a little welding around the hole in the floor that is covered with galvanied sheet steel. 220K miles and the engine runs fine, transmission (stick) is in great shape. Heck it even has working AC. It also has good snow tires on it and a spare set of OEM aluminum wheels with newer all season tires on it.

I feel guilty about scrapping it. What should I do ?

Try selling it for some nominal amount to a civic aficionado.

List it on Craigs as a fixer upper

I sold my Wife's 2003 Civic for 500 bucks with a trashed transmission and some body issues..few other issues..one non functioning power window, a weepy turn signal handle..

List it on Craigs and see what happens..

and the following is not a racist broad stroke..

Hispanic folks love these cars..the guy who bought mine bought it for his son as a vehicle
for teaching him how to work on cars..

I had two Toyota corrollas in my history that i drove into the ground..rust around a still good base and motor..

I would regularly find notes on these cars back in the day ( i live in a very Hispanic section of town) with offers to buy..I would also regularly find a local, youngish homeless person sleeping in my Corrollas in the morning in the winter,,that was fine as long as he didnt pee in it.

List it, C-Bell..

Some high school kid would love to have it.

i just sold for $1600 my most wonderful 2005 Ford Focus wagon with PLENTY of miles and several rust spots.

this was the third time i posted the Ford Focus on CL.

all the other times, i had folks coming over but i soon realized i just wasn't ready to sell.

and the same thing was happening this third time.

but a guy came over to take a look.

he was older.

he asked the questions i would have asked.

we got to talking.

he had some bounces in his life.

he had finally turned the corner.

he needed a car that would start and get him to work.

he negotiated the price.

i came down $150.

he put down a $50 deposit.

he came back the next morning with $5s and $10s to pay the balance.

we did the transaction at the kitchen table in my apartment.

i offered him a cup of coffee and an apple.

he took both.

we signed a bill of sale along with all the necessary NYS DMV documents.

it took him a moment to write his name and his info.

his handwriting looked like a child's.

we went back downstairs.

i took off my NYS plates.

i scrapped off the NYS registration sticker on the windshield.

we shook hands, i wished him well and he drove off.

a day went by and i thought i would hear from him if there was a problem.

i haven't heard from him again.

there are good folks out there with very limited resources (on many levels) that just need a vehicle to go from here to there.

my guess is, someone out by you could probably use an old, rusty honda civic.

thumbs up.

Brake lines are cheap. Fix it and sell it. Should be able to get some cash for it. If you were closer I'd give you more than scrap value for it. I need a new winter beater.

Yes, fix the brakes and sell it as a starting-running-stopping car. I would only give it away if I already knew of some deserving soul. Offering it for free on CL would only bring out more crazies.

Is it a hatch? Around here older civics are quite popular with the tuner crowd. Lots of aftermarket parts out there. I would auction it.

My 98 Civic 5 speed has 250k on it. Burns a little oil but runs great. Does have rust. This has been the best car I have ever owned as far as gas mileage and handling in an econo car. People have asked me to call them when I am ready to sell. Won't be worth a chunk but so far so good

Donate it to your local NPR station, that's what we did with our 2000 Civic EX with about 212,000 miles on it.

Is there a local tech school nearby? If so, call them and ask if there is a student in their automotive classes that could use a car?

Viking funeral.

All in favor of this, but the local authorities might not be so happy or forgiving unless it was "accidental."
