Plasma or LCD?

I'm looking to purchase a new HDTV. Plasma or LCD is the dilema. I like the picture better with the plasma (deeper blacks), however the heat factor is an issue. But the real problem is the altitude. I live at 8600 feet and have heard about problems with plasma at altitude. Is this a valid issue? Also have a cabinet to house the unit, but it is configured for 4:3 not 16:9, so max picture size will be 37" if no side speakers. This seems to rule out DLP, as all of the units seem to start at 42". Any favorite brands that go with your advice?

Go with LCD.. there are some reports of plasma screens going bad after just 2-3 years.

Here ya go, a review of the two best 37" plasma and lcd TVs, side-by-side. [www.plasmatvbuyingguide.com]

The plasma is cheaper with a slightly better picture but burns more energy and will eventually fade. The LCD will likely last longer and has a real nice picture, but not as good as the plasma. A toss up between the two IMHO.

I would get the LCD though. . .the burn-in issue with the plasmas is not good.

and LCD prices are dropping. . .

Paying thousands for something that will fade in a few years (plasma) according to a lot I read here and elsewhere sounds bizarre to me.

I forgot to add that review is hardly unbiased. PlasmaTV buying guide? What were they going to do, endorse LCD?

They are not biased toward either Plasma or LCD.
They run both the Plasma and LCD buying guides sites.

Plasma and LCD are not really in conflict with each other, as consumer electronics makers that sell them sell both. (unlike the old Beta vs VHS or Mac vs PC wars)

I had the same problem. The cabinet, which fit a 53" 4:3 screen nicely, could only expand to fit a 55"ish 16:9 unit - at that size, it would be like going down to a 45" screen for 4:3 SD.

So, I moved the cabinet to be part of my home office remodel and bought a 61" thin DLP.

Whether it sounds "normal" or not, the mentality is that it's a throwaway. The allure of the picture is what captures people - very seductive. The masses aren't thinking two months down the road, much less two years.

BTW, watch a baseball game on a plasma set and you'll want one immediately. It's like you're sitting at the park in one of those boxes, looking at the game out a window. When they do a dugout shot, you can literally read the line-up card on the wall. It's unreal.

Sharp Aquos LCD's look mighty good. I'm very pleased with my
Sony 50" A10 but I see you have size restrictions and the
smallest in that series is a 42". Remember no big TV is
perfect it just has to be something you're satisfied with,
they all have pluses and minus's. One thing to remember about
Plasma is the high gloss glass screen, it reflects almost
every light source in the room.

I've seen both of these and they look good.
