So one reason for doing all this is to find the optimal placement of access points in the house. Article does not address the spouse-acceptance-of-the-optimal-placement issue.

do they do that many router reviews? I didn't find many but maybe I wasn't looking in the right place.

Ars does not review routers that often. They do not have a specific section for reviews of network hardware. It looks like most of the reviews/tests are in the "Gadgets" section.

After a couple of years of very slow advances, I stopped my weekly reading of networking sites for reviews. I can dig through links and post some currently active ones if anybody is really interested.
