Is this a pipe dream or is there a program available for me to retrieve data from an "erased" hard drive?

Obviously for a Mac OSX 13

SSD or HDD? AFPS or HFS?

DataRescue is probably one of the better ones, otherwise mail it to Ontrack.

Disk Drill - GUI version of the above, costs money. Full price is NOT worth it. I bought a copy for $4 on Slickdeals forum, from a user who got it as part of a Mac bundle and didn't need it.

.....if you wait for the new 'Picard' TV show........Data will be resurrected on it.......in what form......???

Yep. Ten years or so ago, my IT guy was rebuilding our server database, and neglected to do a backup first. Data went poof! Cost $5,000 to have a company reconstruct it. Medical office went back to paper for about a week.

Erased data on a SSD is very precarious. If the drive was very full, wear leveling could be overwriting data whenever it is powered up.

I knew a photographer who's HD went T/U, but he needed to recover the data.

It cost him $2000 even from DriveSavers, but he got it all back. That was maybe 15 years ago.

All of our common tools are active, for want of a better word. Destructive might be better.

I'm waiting (and it's a wait) for Steve Gibson's SpinRite for Mac to ship.

SpinRite isn't perfect and has it's detractors, but apparently it has a very high save rate on the Other Side. He's got another project going, but after that, it's our turn.

Right now, Mac HDs can be examined and potentially repair as with PC HDs, by connecting them to the internal bus of a PC and booting from the SpinRite app.

It's supposedly a nondestructive (or something like that) repair. I'm not sure about the nuts and bolts, but it sounds better than anything we have so far, for home use.

I understand it doesn't help now, but it's something to look forward to.

Attempt any kind of recovery yourself can/may make professional recovery less effective to impossible.

That said, if it were my HD, I'd try DiskWarrior, only because if it can access the drive, it can give an opinion without altering any part of the drive.

It will say if it can't repair it prior to attempting a repair.

If it thinks it could, me- I'd give it ago, unless it was absolutely critical.

Then I'd have to consider professional care.

One of the main things is, somehow I merged the two hard drives, "Fusion" Apple calls it.

That will of course screw me even more but anyone have any sage advice?

Which of the previous tips have you followed? Those people citing $1000s for recovery - have you priced a service recently? Last time I checked, it was much less than it used to be, but I dunno.

If you have a fusion drive - stop messing around. You will need to buy high end recovery software or take it to a pro.

You might be SOL on that one. I've never had anyone recover a Fusion drive, not saying it can't be done. I've just never seen it done.

My best data recovery was a dual problem. Bad drive and it was Filevault encrypted AND they lost the passcode. After days of trying I was able to restore the drive to a new drive, and a few days of trying passwords later I actually managed to guess his password. He had provided a list of passwords for other things he had used and I started guessing deviations and things that sounded similar. To this day I am still amazed I retrieved the data.
