bad idea or terrible idea? bathroom fan led on a dimmer

I have a bathroom fan with a built in led light. It does not say that its dimmable. I'm tempted to try putting it on an led compatible dimmer switch anyway. The light and fan are on different circuits. Am I likely to damage the led light?

(I personally don't understand why alllll leds aren't dimmable. technology blah blah blah....)

Meh. Might kinda work. Might also buzz, and/or not work very well.

It wouldn’t be dangerous, but worst case scenario is you end up with a fan+light integrated fixture with a dead light and you’d have to replace the whole thing.

But that seems unlikely...kinda.

Is there more complexity to dimming a led than I expect? Or is it about cost cutting?

Yes, and yes.

A dimmer is basically just providing a reduced AC voltage to the light. The LED itself runs on low voltage DC provided by the electronics that are either part of the fixture or the bulb itself. Those electronics have to be designed to respond to reduced AC voltage input and put out a lower voltage DC to the LED. Simple, low cost electronics don't do that. This is the simple explanation, the details get more complicated

That was a good simple explanation.
