Impressive that there weren't a zillion little AA-sized batteries strewn across the street. The Tesla also appeared to be a loaner from a dealership.

Not sure. One thing I’m familiar with from airplane crash worthiness design I learned is that if you can keep the passenger compartment from deforming, you go a long way towards increasing the survivability of the passengers. Anything outside that compartment that can be deformed or removed, will take energy away from the situation (that would otherwise be absorbed by the passengers). I don’t see the rear of the car attached anymore. That may be an intentional design feature in lateral load situations (compared to frontal or rear loads that would best be dealt with by crumple zones).

At about 1:08 it appears to show the rear seats are there and it kind of looks like the middle and left are okay but the right rear is leaned forward. They didn't split off with the rear of the vehicle.

Just an insane crash all the way around. Glad that (apparently) nobody was badly injured.

Right, I saw the seats too, but assumed s-t meant what the conditions might have been like in the rear of the passenger compartment.

Interestingly that’s a Model X. So it has a third row.. The missing section includes the third row. I can’t imagine the fate of anyone if they happened to be in the third row (in this instance there was no one) and something similar happened.

That's literally a crime scene, and there should have been more police sooner to preserve it.

Their response time to contain it seemed slow to me, but there may have been unavoidable circumstances.

Even when the last unit arrived, it took awhile before somebody started clearing people out.

The mustang was an innocent bystander. Farther up the street there is a white Nissan GTR thats mangled -- its what hit the Tesla.

Yes, that was a big WTF! moment for me.

Around here he would have been arrested for felony reckless driving.

It could possibly be charged as a misdemeanor, but I think it would make the cut as a felony.

In S.F. that could be as lightweight an 'accident' as in FL.

In many states 30mph over the speed limit is a very serious offense and comes with lots of points.

Washington, 20+ over is instant reckless driving. Lots of tickets get written as 18 over as a signal to a judge that the offender already got a break from the officer. I got an 18 over for 90+ in a 60. Road was empty and the state trooper was impressed a Buick could go over Snoqualmie Pass at triple digits. I told the trooper everything was new and I considered it safe to about 150. He said do it on someone elses road. I agreed and left with my ticket.

For Florida:

Reckless driving is defined as "any person who drives any vehicle in willful or wanton disregard for the safety of persons or property" (Florida Statute 316.192). As reckless driving is categorized as a misdemeanor in Florida, it has the potential to carry jail time. According to state statute 545.401, the punishment may include:

A $500 fine
Up to 90 days in jail
Both jail time and the fine combined
If you are convicted of a second offense, each of those possible punishments doubles; in that case, you could pay $1000 and spend up to 6 months behind bars.

If property damage is involved in the reckless driving incident, or you cause serious bodily harm to a passenger or another driver, you are facing a third degree offense. Third degree offenses are punishable by a fine of $5000 and up to 5 whole years in jail.

Reckless vs. Careless Driving

In Florida, there is a violation known as "careless driving," which slightly differs from the more serious charge of reckless driving. Careless driving is speeding, weaving through traffic, following too closely - but without "wanton disregard" for the safety of everyone around. These behaviors may be dangerous, but they are mostly unintentional slip-ups that drivers commit, such as not paying attention to the road, or misjudging your following distance. A careless driving citation will usually carry the option for dismissal with completion of a DHSMV-approved Florida traffic school course.

The penalties for careless driving vary based upon the severity of the infraction, and whether or not the police officer has substantial evidence for conviction in court.


Based upon the above, he should be charged with a third degree offense.
