Paper Shredder Recommendations

The motor of our 8 years old Bull Dog 10 page micro-cut is on its last leg. Its 80$ price has served us well. Now is the time to get a replacement. It does not have to be the same brand and maker but reliability is good. Tia.

Amazon Basics used to be well regarded. Mine’s fine.

Edit: Wirecutter likes them alright. Link

We use a Amazonbasics similar to this one in the school testing office (where most everything gets shredded) and it is on year four.

Another vote for Amazon Basics. Quiet and doesn't bog down.

whatever you get, just make sure to oil the cutters fairly frequently.... a lot of it is also learning how the cutters sound while munching when oiled, and when needing oil. I burned out a couple of shredders over the years due to lack of proper oiling, but our current (and hopefully last) shredder has been going strong for years w/ periodic oiling.

Costco usually has a cross cut shredder on their shelf. Bought one from them works great! I forgot the model when I get back home, I will provide an edit.

I second regular oiling of the shedder.

I've got an old shredder that's a tank, but it's not cross cut and it cuts a little wider than a Fellows I ordered from AMZ (long before they did their Basics line of goods)

Besides the added security margin of cross-cut, I'd get it solely for the increase in capacity over the older single-cut variety.

Do they even make those anymore?

I'll never buy another shredder with a pull-out basket. They're a mess.

My next shredder, should I ever need another one, will be something like this Fellows.

Take a couple of pieces of 8.5 x 11 paper, dip a brush in vegetable oil, make an d from corner to corner on the paper with oil (1-2 inches wide), run paper through shredder.

Do this once or twice.

Some shredders have a built in oiler. Would have to check the model of the mid range shredder at work, it has a plug under a cover on the top of its case near the feed slot. Just need to add an ounce or two of oil every couple months.

I read to use mineral oil (baby oil) but same application.

We have used Gary's method. It kept our old shredder going for a long time.
