cheapest way to get legit mp3 downloads?

Say I want to buy 2-3 full albums of popular stuff that's on every download service. Let's assume 9.99/album price. I could pay 2-3x 9.99 and have them now. Do any of the paid music subscriptions include downloads where it would make more sense to pay $5-$10 for a month of service, download those 2-3 albums and come out $20 ahead?

Or are all the services just streaming? Inquiring mind wants to know...

Could defer a few Amazon Prime deliveries for credit and buy an album for every 10 orders or so.

But if you drop Spotify, do you get to keep those downloaded songs?

I'm pretty sure none of the subscription services allow this. If you want to keep the songs you have to keep the subscription. I could be wrong.

Thanks to everyone for your responses.

This is the heart of my question, I guess.

If I subscribe for a month, download a handful of albums, do I get to keep listening after my subscription lapses? The other question, I assume it is not possible to download albums, burn them to audio CD? I'm guessing the answer to both is no (and in various searches/reading, especially about Apple Music, that seems to be confirmed).... (that would seem a large loophole if it were possible).

No worries, I'll just continue with my normal route of purchasing through the iTunes Store or Amazon mp3 download store. just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing some way to save a few bucks and get the same music.

that is the best option. and I could use Apple vs Amazon, I believe Apple offers higher quality than Amazon (AAC vs MP3).

I buy used CDs and rip them to high bitrate MP3.
Usually pay $3 each or so.

Either th physical CD or seek out those compilation CDs. There is also Bandcamp or similar portals, but they are mostly for indy bands.

Find the songs on YouTube. Download from there.

Rental/subscription is different than sales. You don't get to keep. That's the business model. You stop paying, you don't get the service.

I get CDs even cheaper. At goodwill outlet, I can get CDs for $1.39 a POUND. At garage sales, I've been able to get people to sell a bunch of CDs for as low as 10 cents each.

People have also been known to borrow CDs from their local library.

Another in the CD camp, but I've also used Doc's "technique" (albeit much more sparingly than he suggested) for acquiring "gotta have's"....

I applied the premise much more frequently when the $5 off at Whole Foods option was available. There's a showcase WFM down at the corner, and a 365 less than a mile away, so that was a nice subsidy while it lasted.

Doesn't anyone use cassettes anymore??? I've got a couple of hundred cassettes that I can't bear to part with, so while I keep 10 - 15 at a time in the cars (yes, the van and the Lexus both have cassette players*), I'd love to rip about half of them into the computer without having to babysit the project. Ripping CD's is way easier.

*TRIVIA- Lexus was the last major car maker to have factory cassettes.... in 2010, IIRC.

Ive got about 100 -- 80s alternative CDs you can have.

If you think about streaming in a more broad sense... you dont just get 12 albums @10 a month -- you get 120000.

of course, there is always....

.....many have done this..........but a lot of newer music is there......'older' may not be as easily gotten.....or more 'non-mainstream' music.....

No.

That's the purpose of the subscription– to keep music alive.

The day you cancel it, that's the day the music died.

Subscription = rent, not purchase.

Ok, it's possible that you can use the music to the end of your subscribed time period, regardless of when you cancel, but certainly not beyond the end of it.

I saw a situation, possibly with AMZ music, where even purchased music and video may not function one the service is dropped.

I doubt it's legitimate, but hijacking YouTube can possibly yield acceptable results. I imagine the best you'll do is 256-320 bit, though.

That's how I built vinyl, CD, and cassette collections....
Those old-timey music subscription club services used to run all sorts promos, so that the cost per media item was surprisingly low if/when you played the game correctly. Cancel one, join another, wait for the "please come back" special, get super special for adding media type, rinse and repeat. Then came AMZ.
