I am fighting the flu and I have a high fever (fever returns before I can take the next dose of Motrin to bring it down). I learned that I am very sensitive to shower temperature during one of these episodes. The shower valve, a Moen, is probably 30 year old. It is the push/pull style with a knob that goes 180 degree. It is very sensitive in the region where I feel comfortable. if someone uses another fixture when I take a shower, the temperature changes and new curse words are spoken in languages yet to be invented.

I am curious if a newer valve would have better temperature control. Thanks.

Yes, if you buy a high quality temperature or pressure compensating valve. It makes a massive difference. The temperature-compensating valves also protect you from temperature shocks when someone opens a faucet somewhere or turns on the washing machine. The problem is, you generally can't replace the valve without tearing the wall apart.

I don't have the answer to your query but...I've wondered why, given all the technology at our fingertips, we don't have a shower control with set temps.

We do. The temperature-compensating controls on our shower, which is now about 20 years old, have the temperature printed on the dial. Set and forget!

I did check and it is possible to retrofit a thermostatic mixer to a shower that has separate hot and cold faucets, but I didn't see anything that would retrofit space-time's Moen. There might be something out there though.

OK, thanks. if I need to tear down the wall, I won't do it now, but I will definitely keep that in mind when time comes.

I'd get in touch with Moen directly. They have the best customer service ever. If anyone makes a retrofit to meet your needs, Moen would.

In the meantime, before you replace your plumbing, just go shower w/ a friend that has more modern plumbing.

I just dealt with this and the same kind of Moen.
I suggested updating and taking the wall down. But alas.
For a few bucks more a better made shower valve/body is a good investment.
When you change, I suggest Kohler or Delta, or hansgrohe if you don't mind foreign. And don't buy from homies. Not the same product.
Buy from a local plumbing supply.
While we have a 12yo AmStandard shower upstairs, I'd never buy that brand again. The cartridges seem to have a higher failure rate than others I've used. YMMD.

The other thing is, I think it's a good idea to check inside a water wall every now and then. One never knows.

BEFORE you "tear open the wall", visit Moen's website. Moen had SO many choices and options available! I stumbled on it AFTER I had bought / installed a $500 shower panel. Because that shower had been a major upgrade, the enclosure had been completely gutted. It would have been easy to do all sorts of creative things while the studs were visible. I did go with Moen faucets then which proved to be a wise choice. 10+ years later, the kitchen faucet started to drip. One call to Moen and new replacement parts were sent right out, courtesy of Moen's warranty. My experience was that Moen is a GREAT company to deal with!

I agree. Fever is a necessary part of fighting an infection. Our pediatrician said that the only reason to give medicine to lower a fever is to make a child comfortable, not to help them get better.

I've stayed in a few nice hotels internationally that have a digital display associated with the shower that allows you to set a specific temperature. Really nice once you figure out the temperature that you like.

Most of the units sold in the US work off a temperature delta. That means that the control needs to be adjusted seasonally if your location has significant temperature swings thru the course of the year as the regulation is based upon in incoming cold water temperature.

....would it help to shower.......together......???
