So I bought a cheap Qi compatible charging pad. Say I place the iPhone at 50% charge on it. The battery turns green and shows the charging symbol. Come back an hour later and it is still at 50%. I had it plugged into a USB port on my Mac Mini.

So I bought a better charger today, plugged it straight into an outlet and placed the phone on it at 60% charge. An hour later, it still shows 60% despite the battery icon showing that it is charging.

Any ideas what is going on?

I find that my cheap Qi charger from Amazon is very very sensitive to exact placement. It can start the night in the right place, but a quick bump or nudge when i set my iPad back on the nightstand can cause it to shift. I also find I have to unplug my charger once in a while.

In the market for something better that I can buy at the Apple store for around $80 (how much store credit I have)...

No, but try restarting it and see if it makes a difference. Mine did the same thing; I updated to the latest OS (at that time) and it fixed it.

What is the Amperage of the usb Charger? What are the requirements of the Qi Charger?

Get the stand kind instead of the pad kind.... generally tend to work better.

I did a hard reset of the iPhone and it finally started charging. Definitely not fast charging though....

It might help to track down an app that shows the real time charging amperage, then move the phone around on the charging pad to learn where the sweet spot is.

You can't generally use a USB port to power this. You need a power adapter that provides at LEAST 2.1A...

My wife leaves her Xr on the wireless charger overnight. It was a cheaper charger, 5w. Works slowly, but it does charge.

I have one on my desk at work. When I have to leave for meeting, I will place it on there for a small boost.
