Have you bought some face masks?
Posted by: rgG
Date: February 25, 2020 04:13PM
People are buying every dust/face mask we have. It is crazy.
This has been going on for a month and seems to be getting even worse.
We are mostly OOS but sometimes we will get a few in and then they fly off the shelves. lol

People that just need to keep dust out when doing a project are SOL.

No, as there is only one confirmed case near us. There were over a dozen suspected cases that turned out _not_ to be covid 19.

Its best to allow them to be distributed to those who need them. Its silly to grab them from the shelves thinking its going to make a difference.

We do have a pretty good store of meat and kinds bars. Would leave the house for fruit and veg.

N95 respirator mask is what you want.

Fitted by someone with training. And bad if you have current respiratory issues.

Wife spent 2 years working in bio-terrorism department for the County, and 15 years before that in infectious diseases/stds (hiv/aids/hep c) etc.

Shes "meh" on the whole thing so far.

The actual virus is smaller than what an N95 mask would filter out, but assuming it's carried in a sneeze or cough, it might filter out the particles carrying the virus.

Although you have it use it properly! The local news was interviewing folks at LAX a while back and the two guys wearing N95 masks hadn't bothered to pinch the nose bridge, making the masks about as effective as a surgeon's mask (which isn't designed to filter you from the outside world, but rather protect the outside world from you).

If I was going to wear a mask, it would be a half mask respirator, and that would probably freak people out, but I find it way more comfortable and easier to breath in than the disposable kind.

There was a little girl, and she had a little bird, And she called it by the pretty name of Enza; But one day it flew away, but it didn't go to stay, For when she raised the window, in-flu-Enza.

One of my grandfathers almost died from the "Spanish Flu". PBS American Experience had a informative program a while back about the it.

"In science it often happens that scientists say, 'You know that's a really good argument; my position is mistaken,' and then they would actually change their minds and you never hear that old view from them again. They really do it. It doesn't happen as often as it should, because scientists are human and change is sometimes painful. But it happens every day. Forget masks, I'm staying a bit ahead on food for me and my critters. If any area experiences a quarantine, shopping and store shelves could be problematic. Kind of like hurricane preparedness (or tornado or earthquake).

Hmmm, I wonder if what I have will work. I think it's N99 rather than N95: [www.amazon.com]

This is quite true, and also one tends to forget that it's important to have stuff that doesn't require too much in the way of refrigeration, freezing, or preparation. Also don't forget the bottled water rule: minimum 1 gallon / person / day.

Transmission has not been studied to know if the majority of transmission is airborne or from surfaces (it survives up to 9 days). Gloves only work if you don't touch your face while wearing them.

N95 mask should be enough to catch most airborne particles as long as the humidity is not really low, which allows the water to evaporate. A face shield would help a lot, reminding people to not touch their faces. A full face mask that properly seals with a N95 or better filter should prevent touch or airborne transmission but your presence wearing it might concern the general public.

I have a box of N95 respirators. Picked them up in early January before the rush.

Figured I could use them as dust masks if this year's plague didn't pan out.

I'm leery of counterfeit N95s now. That the virus can survive 9 days is really scary.

Depends on a lot of factors, but preliminarily it seems that on most surfaces it's dead in a half hour or so and in optimal conditions it's good for about 4-5 days.

Coronaviruses can probably live for up to 9 days on common surfaces, but not necessarily THE coronavirus. They also don't have any idea how effectively the virus can transfer from various surfaces to a human.

This is the operative quote about the 9-day study:

The study has limitations since the team only reviewed studies and data from other types of coronaviruses to land their conclusions.

...But if you want to worry, try this:

Some of the veterinary coronaviruses - the ones that can only infect animals - could even persist for longer than 28 days.

It's really unlikely that this virus can live on surfaces for any significant amount of time. If it were, all the packages/mail being sent out of China would have infected the entire world by now. [www.npr.org]

I had a Kickstarter shipped from China delayed by 4 weeks. It had tracking and the maker published updates. Sat on a ship for two weeks, then sat on the dock for almost 2 weeks before the USPS picked it up. Then 2 days to deliver it.

The delay was unusual. There was some speculation in the Kickstarter comments that the USPS was taking so long because they were irradiating packages to destroy the virus. I expect that the USPS was just being very inefficient. But with that long a delay, I'm confident that it was perfectly fine to open that package. :::cough:::

I hope everyone else wears a mask and protects me.
Since the masks are one use only, except for the refillable cartridge ones that make you look like a Mad Max extra, you would have to have a lot of them to do much good.
Where I work, there would be virtually no way I could protect myself, to any great degree.
Best I can do is try and not get too close to people and to not touch my eyes and nose as much. Extra hand washing would be good, too, but hard to run to a sink every 5 minutes.

Bought some today at Lowe's. We're getting on an airplane on Monday and we'll bring them along. If anybody near us starts coughing we'll put them on. We also bought a pack of antibacterial wipes for various hard surfaces. I presume those will be more useful than the masks, but what the heck...

Most limit the spread, for some germs.

I've got some black typical surgical type face masks for my walks in cold weather.

Other than that, I haven't bothered.

More valuable than wearing masks is washing your hands frequently, and not touching your face until they're clean.

My next purchase will be another Camelbak specifically for Purell. While its claims do not make the FDA happy, it's easier to goop up while out and about than using soap and hot water, until one is close to some.

And with my hands all goopy, nobody will want to touch me, or me touch them to your face.

And a boatload from complications from the now weakened immune system.

My grandmother had the flu, admitted to the hospital because of pneumonia and bronchitis. She died.

and we have a number of N95 masks for when we are cutting and polishing rocks and minerals that are toxic, or even poisonous, as are some of the polishing compounds.
