What you do when your whole house is lifted off the ground and lands 50 yards away in pieces with you in it.

horrifying...wondering about that Tornado warning system down there..guess it was late but..

my only reference to this was experiencing 100 mph winds on the Southeastern shore of lake michigan about 7 years ago...sustained for about 30-40 seconds in the onset of a storm that brought major destruction just south of where i was..snapped off 40 very robust trees half way up..

when that wind hit..never heard anything like it..that sound the guy in the video described..dense, deep and scary as hell, puncutated by the sound of two old oak trees snapping in half..i dove into the fireplace of this all wood structure and the housekeeper was in the masonry woodbin next to me..she was screaming..windows buckling and flapping...can't even begin to imagine what another 50 to 80mph would be like. i've always said i would like to experience a tornado, but seriously, that one experience was enough to make understand how powerful these events could be..

tornado "OUTBREAK"? WTF. Are they now spreading like viruses?

"Tornado alley" is further west in OK and KS. The homes you see there (and lots of them here in KY and IN) do not have basements. Tornadoes happen around here, and when they do they are devastating, but they are not common and the probability of a particular house being destroyed is very low. Trailer parks and homes on slabs or crawl spaces keep housing prices low.

Until that day when the improbable happens all is well.

A few years ago I watched the TV radars showing not one but two tornados heading to my house, one after the other. I was in a presumably safe closed room underground, but it was real scary. Both of them turned as they got close and passed about 10 miles to the north of us. It was late afternoon and there was plenty of warning although at least one school bus had to very quickly drop of its load of students in a building that they all hoped was sturdy enough (it was). Several small towns had to be completely rebuilt.

They don't happen often around here, but when they do ... !!!
