Would you do it?

It's not a traditional vaccine, but an RNA vaccine.

Researchers in Seattle have begun recruiting healthy volunteers to participate in a clinical trial for an experimental COVID-19 vaccine, according to news reports.

The vaccine, developed by the biotechnology company Moderna Therapeutics, was initially sent to the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) in Maryland on Feb. 24, according to The Wall Street Journal. The agency anticipates launching a clinical trial by the end of April and will sponsor the Kaiser Permanente Washington Health Research Institute to conduct the testing, NIAID Director Anthony Fauci told The Wall Street Journal...

...The vaccine does not contain the virus that triggers COVID-19, called SARS-CoV-2, and cannot cause infection, according to a report by Kaiser Permanente. Unlike vaccines developed for other viruses, such as measles, this new vaccine does not utilize a weak or dead virus as its base. Instead, the vaccine contains a short segment of genetic material called messenger RNA, or mRNA, generated in a laboratory. In a typical cell, mRNA encodes instructions for building different proteins.

The artificial mRNA prompts cells to build a protein found on the surface of the virus, according to the Kaiser Permanente report. A person's immune system should react to this new protein by building up an arsenal of antibodies that target and latch onto this protein, tagging the virus for elimination. Then, the mRNA should break down and be eliminated by the body, leaving the vaccinated person better prepared to fight off SARS-CoV-2, should they ever encounter it.

I'd be willing to do it, based on what I've read and understand about the mRNA vaccines, I just have serious doubts that the vaccine will be effective.

Not currently but my view might be different if I was facing quarantine.

All vaccines are experimental, even the approved ones.
No recourse.
Big Pharma fully protected by law.

So if you believe in vaccines, the fact that it is experimental should not hold you back.

Yes, I would volunteer. At 80 yrs, I'm in a high risk category, and beyond my expiration/best used by date.

There's good reason for this. Creating new vaccines is extremely expensive and high risk with regards to lawsuits. It had gotten to the point that many drug companies had decided to get out of the business of doing this, and this of course put the public at risk. Hence, the government assumed liability for this.

With the current "regulations hurt corporate profit" policy stance I would not take a vaccine developed under duress by a domestic US drug company, as I feel my risk is significantly underprotected relative to the company's bottom line and investors.

I might consider one developed by a European pharmaceuticals concern.

I'd even consider one from China given that they have the most experience of anyone with coronavirus at present, although the US Administration's response seems to be well situated to give the States a significant (dis)advantage there.

So if you believe in vaccines

Their efficacy, or their actual existence?

Too little info provided, red flags raised in the absence of more data. Which cells would express the mRNA, and would they be targeted by antibodies? Suppose the mRNA got expressed in my lung cells and provoked an immune response? Would Big Pharma pay for my lung transplant?

Not from any legal obligation.

But the government might throw you a few bucks from their vaccine injury fund if your doctors follow strict procedures and document every moment of the vaccination and subsequent injury and report it to the appropriate authorities within a limited time-period and if you then submit about a dozen forms, keep the case open by submitting new forms every few months and wait twenty years or so for an arbitration hearing.

All science is experimental. by definition. No such thing as a risk-free medical procedure.

IDK if I would get it even if it wasn't experimental...

I voted no because I believe I'm low risk. However, I think I would change my vote if the conditions were those that RgrF suggested.

"In science it often happens that scientists say, 'You know that's a really good argument; my position is mistaken,' and then they would actually change their minds and you never hear that old view from them again. They really do it. It doesn't happen as often as it should, because scientists are human and change is sometimes painful. But it happens every day. I cannot recall the last time something like that happened in politics or religion." (1987) -- Carl Sagan
