Cross '7's to distinguish them from '1's.

Cross 'z's to distinguish from '2's.

Slash '0's to distinguish from 'O's.
Some typefaces have a centered dot in the zero.

It is not an affectation, but a real disambiguation requirement.

My mom did that, she was taught in Mexico.
But it makes sense as TheCaber mentions.

Learned that in the Army. It was the norm for folks in MI & SigInt and everyone

No on the '7's, yes on the 'Z's, no on the '0's. If I had to regularly write down mixes of numbers and letters, I would no doubt follow your protocol fully.

or a European thing?

I grew up knowing this as a 'European' convention.

Many people I've known that use that seven also write the number 1 without a lower serif, as most of us probably do, but with an extended upper serif at a downward angle which was supposed to further differentiate it from the number 7.

Before individual computers became a thing, CA DMV employees hand wrote a lot of temporary document that included VINs and CDL (yeah- deal with it) numbers and had a specific numerology they were required do use to avoid someone later altering the document.

I've never used any of that. The old Palmer method for numbers was good enough for me. My cursive sucks by my printing is good.

I'm surprised at the results so far. I'd like to see how you all write a 1 that makes it look like a 7. I'm also curious if you have a hard time distinguish between the two when typed.

Only do a slash on the zeros to distinguish from the Oh's. Never need to do that for the Z's or 7's as my handwriting was good enough for there not to be any confusion on those.

I learned to do this in college. Doing page after page of calculations only to realize that I’d confused a 5 with an S three pages ago taught me to cross 0,S,7,Z

(Many) Europeans do make a big diagonal slash from the top of their ones, like so:

...and when it’s handwriting, without a solid baseline, I could totally see how the second “one” above could be confused with seven. Unfortunately and ironically (I think) the seven-with-a-slash then gets awfully close sometimes to the triangle 4 (first one below):

I had a German Intern who designed a prt for me. I told him to go to the machine shop and get it made
he put the drawing in there and wrote Qty; 1, but the way he wrote the one, could be understood like a 7 by someone in US. So our machinist saw "7" and said screw that, it's too many parts, I am too busy, I will send this out for quotation. It came back at $300 each so he ordered it. A week later I get 7 parts on my desk. I ask the intern WTF? he goes to the machinist to clarify. That both come back and the machinist was holding the $2100 invoice in his hand which I had to approve.

When I was a teaching assistant, I wrote 4, US students asked me what figure was that.

Another big source of confusion is time. Many european people think PM starts at 1:00PM

So if they want a meeting after lunch, they say 12:30 AM. I had the notification pop up on my phone in the middle of the night.

So it depends who I write for. If I write for someone in US or someone one from Europe, I do change the way I write figures.

Not 7s.

But I do cross Zs and sometimes zeros depending on the context.

Depends on the situation. I definitely slash my zeroes because it’s how I was trained in programming classes in the early 70’s. I sometimes cross my 7’s. I never learned to cross my z’s unless I’m doing calligraphy and the style demands it.

Cross an ell (l)? Doesn’t that look like a tee (t)? Personally I put a base and a slanted cap on the one, cross the z because they look like a 2 with my sloppy handwriting, and I tend to cross the 7 (again because of my handwriting). The zero may or may not be crossed, as I cross it only to make communication clearer on a case-by-case basis. All done to facilitate understanding of course.

LaCabre FTW, excellent 'splanation, especially for peeps with bad handwriting. For those of y'all w/ Mrs. Palmer's perfect penmanship, skimping on some of those adjustments seems reasonable.

back in the day that I did a lot of math, I would cross my 7s - having bad hand writing, I quickly learned that math and sci teachers had little patience for unclear writing. To this day, my handwriting is a mess until I start writing numbers - they are perfectly clear.

In regular writing is just isn't necessary imo.

(Many) Europeans do make a big diagonal slash from the top of their ones, like so:

The clear difference is the core of the number is perfectly vertical. If there's a ~70° angle on it, it's a 7.

I lived in Europe. The common mistake I saw them continually make was not paying attention to the vertical line.

Figure 3 (from the left, as I always count from left to right) is what I saw those you used European Style use for numeral 1.

I couldn't find an example that, so good on ya, pdq.

I cross my sevens. Somebody once saw one and remarked that I do French sevens.

There is another ambiguity that doesn't seem to have been mentioned here. When writing digits on items that could be read in different orientations, there is an ambiguity between 6 and 9. I therefore put a horizontal line beneath the digit, particularly when writing on test tubes and such. Think about writing a 6 or a 9 diagonally on a box or a sphere.
