Since airlines are saying that their planes are very empty, there's one thing they could do up-front that might reassure passengers a bit more.

They could eliminate seating in center coach seats, mark those seats as unavailable in their seat maps and let potential customers know that they will be empty. Knowing that there will be one seat of separation between passengers and you won't be rubbing elbows the entire flight might make the thought of flying more attractive.

And they can book the window and aisle seat knowing that they'll have three seats to themselves And one of them can move to the center once on the plane if they really want to be that close.

Unfortunately, elbow room would be insufficient, due to droplets being able to be spread up to six feet. We need to suspend the TSA and divert those funds to active pre-boarding health assessments. If you have fever, there is no way you should be allowed on a sealed tin can with recirculating air. Our country wastes scads of money on what we all recognize as security theater, while the public risk of travel was left unaddressed.

They can't make money with that many empty seats unless business/first class are full, and rich people are staying in their very nice homes more and more, and non-critical business travel has been canceled.

Back in 1994, I went on temporary duty to Osan AB. The North Koreans were seriously acting up then, and the 747 from San Francisco to Seoul was practically empty. I had an entire middle section to myself, and I did lie down and sleep for quite awhile.
