Mac Pro 09-12 Dually: What is that Mystery Connector?

For the forum's (or OWC's) experts...
Classic Mac Pro Duals 2009-2012 have an unmarked connector on the CPU board.
It's at the front to the left of CPU A's RAM slots.
I can't find anything in Service Manual, apple.com, or anywhere else about wth it is.

Here's my crappy pix with labelling:

Here's an unedited pix:

It's the factory diagnostic port. Not useful to end-users.

Are those pics a 4.1 and 5.1? My 3.1 is a completely different beast. 2 RAM boards separate from the CPUs for instance. Just asking.

I knew you might know. Confirms what I thought it might be!
(Might be "fun" to see a pin-out.)

Yes. 3,1 is an entirely different beast.

That's a 5,1. 4,1 uses delidded CPUs.

Actually, that is a 4,1 that got lidded Xeons. Requires some #8/4mm brass washers,
two narrow strips of 3mm thermal pad, & a little common sense when screwing down the sinks.
5,1 Dually has CPU locking frames.

I did not know that about the 5,1. I have a 4,1 that I upgraded to 5680's that I bought delidded because I didn't want to mess with washers.

I wasn't going to post this now but I am bored.
A few bits of info I learned while researching 4,1 Dually Upgrades.
  • The vast majority of 'delidded' Xeons sold are just that, someone has physically
forced the IHS off. It is a scary, hit or miss procedure.
  • There's practically NO chance you could get a genuine 'Apple' delidded Xeon.
Intel made these in batches for Apple 10+ years ago!
  • Xeons with lids are a lot cheaper than "delidded" versions.
  • Using lidded requires only $2.40 worth of brass washers + $2 square of 3mm thermal pad.
The #8 brass washers are $1.20/12 @ HD & are almost identical to the suggested
4mm (It takes 3 per post for perfect spacing).
  • On an intact Xeon put just a small pea size dab of thermal paste dead-center
on the lid. When correctly screwed down, the heat sink spreads it evenly *.
  • Use a 'star pattern' to tighten the h-s screws down, half turn @ a time, and
stop when you feel resistance. No more!
  • I prefer to surrender a small % of speed and use lower TDP (95W) Xeons.
  • Hardest part is connecting the fan plugs to the board. Tweezers & hemostat help!
* I had to pull CPU A when I discovered misplacement of the thermal pad on its regulator diodes.
The CPU lid was perfectly coated by the paste. Cleaned & re-applied.
(The factory delids were not evenly coated & discolored!)

Matched pair of X5670's was $29.67 + $4.40 'hardware' = $34.07 Total.
Best price for a pair of delidded X5675's on ebay is $95, can't find X5670's.
But X5675 is 95W TDP and 4% faster.
eBay

btw, One US seller has x5680 delidded pair for $130!
