For the moment it sounds like a nice step up. It will really grind through heavy duty work loads... for 15 - 20 seconds until the CPU overheats and throttles down. It would be really nice if they added at least one more TB3 port over the previous model.

Look for the lowest powered/cost iris Plus chipset and that’s what they put in the MBA

Pre COVIDApocalypse, mobile users needed the most CPU they could get in a laptop. I do not need a TON of capacity, but the 2018 MBA was a little slow.

Fixing that - plus the new keyboard - means this machine would be smaller than my MBPR13 and still serve me well.

Not buying now, but if I were to need a new machine, this MBA would be it.

If you believe the Wikipedia for the new MBAir, actually the Core i3 and Core i5 have the midrange Iris Plus chipset (not even the low-end, which they could have chosen) and the i7 has the top end Iris Plus chipset, so this is a considerable upgrade over the previous UHD 617 GPU.
