FIXED: Mail no longer marking good emails as Junk

After years of flawless behavior, Mail (v13 on OS X 10.15.3) was starting to mark more and more legitimate emails as Junk, and placing them in the Junk folder. I posted the question on Apple Discussions last week, and someone made a suggestion that completely fixed the problem. So just in case someone here ever has that question, here's the fix.

Two Steps to get Mail to stop putting good email into the Junk folder:

1. Boot into Safe Mode (Use Safe Mode to isolate issues with your Mac and Playing Safe: what does Safe Mode do?).
Then reboot normally.
That will clear out old cache, swap and system files, some of which may be corrupted, which might be the cause of the problems.

2. Close Mail
In Finder click Go, then Go to folder
then copy this and paste into the Go to box:
~/Library/Mail/V7/MailData
In that folder look for file LSMMap2 and delete it.
Re-open Mail

Thanks! Will give this a try since I use Mail. I only a have a few good emails going to junk. However, as appropriate, I have all the political solicitations going to junk plus a multitude of other things.

After this adjustment cited above, do I have to "re-train" mail all over again by marking stuff as junk? Not sure how that whole system works in Mail.

Hm.

tuq, I just did the fix, and it's too soon to tell if it worked.

I didn't check the Junk folder prior to see if there were any false-junk entries.

But checking after the fix, there were ten genuine junk emails, but no false-junk emails.

I hope this works!

So far, I haven't needed to.

I think one of the biggest keys to keep this clean is to always "Add to Contacts" with any email you want to mark for the Inbox.

To help with this, I use a Mail Rule (see screenshot) that says "Sender is not in my contacts" and then visually mark it in gray text. That way, I can quickly recognize what senders I haven't get added yet. I then click on their name and the dropdown allows me to instantly add them to the Contacts app without having to open it up. If I DO have time then, I'll go in and edit their new Contact card and make sure the first name/last name, etc are all set up (I'm big on adding photos but that's another story).
