Speed of SD Cards for Digital Cameras

Took 150 pics tonight on my brand new Canon S2 IS. VERY NICE. (see the p.s. for a general report on my evening of shooting).

The only downer was the write time after a shot (shooting at 5MP "Fine" (not superfine). Seemed like the wrtie time for a pic was about 2 to 3 seconds.

The card I was using was a brand new Viking 512MB card which I got for about $13 after an instant rebate. I think it is rated at 13X. I read on dpreview that this camera desires a 60X card for good write speed performance.

Is this the issue? Could there be anything else causing this.

Also -- any recommendations on fast SDs. Seems like the 1G ones that are fast are about $100. Will I simply have to pay for an expensive card to get good performance.

Or am I missing something.

Thanks,

p.s. shoot report: I was shooting in a theatre - no flash at 400 ASA mostly between 8X and 10X focal lengths from about 40 ft.. Amazingly good color balance. Very little grain printing at 4 X 5. Shutter was pretty slow, about 1/40th of second so movement on stage caused bluring. But when I caught the actors still, the image stabilization performed like a champ and produced crisp results..

my SDII writes at about 6-7 MB/sec, read at about 8. It cost $84 at Costco.

The S2 writes at about 3mb a second. That lands it in between 40x and 80x territory and depending on whose card speed rating you use. I would not go below that if you want fast and continuous write speeds.

I paid $30 a 128MB SD card for my Kodak EasyShare 3.2MegPixel digicam!
It's not even Viking's. Got it at Office Depot.

listen to pRON, don't do slow. 1GB speedies $40 - $50 after rebates, and snagged a 2GB for $90 by looking around. 1GB for $100 is kinda high. enjoy

Sometimes it is what it is...
and then there's times when it's really better.
