What to do with iPad Gen I 32 gb

Just found an old iPad in the house. It holds a charge, screen is good and has been in an Otterbox Defender case since new. It is hideously slow and can barely load a web page.

Any clever use for one of these ‘vintage’ devices?

Put under a leg, it can straighten out a wobbly table pretty well.

IMO only as an e-book reader or video playback device if you run your own back-end server *and* can get the software for the front end. Air Video can run on the iPad 1 (I used it on an iPhone 4) and its back-end server runs on anything but you may have trouble finding the iPad app for the older OS you're stuck with.

My daughter has a similar device (not iPad) mounted in the kitchen on a wall for recipe access.

Not sure what sort of app it is, but I could find out.

Could double as a kitchen radio too.

I'm getting excellent use out of a formerly rarely-used iPad mini 2 to watch videos as I pedal on a recumbent exercise bike. The iPad sits on the shelf of the bike's display and happily accepts and plays m4v files.

The iPad 2 has significantly higher capability than the original. We have an iPad 3 here and as far as the CPU, it's the same thing. Still does a lot of things well, if a bit slowly.

After 7 years of ownership and OS/app upgrades, it finally ground to a halt (literally, it sat there unresponsive and would do nothing) and I had to do it's first wipe and reinstall. Works quite well now!

Can you load it with photos and make it a digital slide show photo frame?

Does your cable provider TV app work on it? Could be a good kitchen TV.
Load a simple chess app onto it and give it to a kid?
eBay for $20?

Using my wife's Mini 1 to post here. Slow, but okay.

FWIW, obsolete IOS devices can only really be used IF you use it with an apple account that used IOS back when the device was not obsolete, AND you used the apps you need. You can usually get it to download the 'old version'.

Want a new app that you never had ? So sorry, yer out of luck.

I've used 3 older iPads to run around 2100 pics. The oldest one, an iPad1 with 16 gigs is still being used by my daughter to run her Slideshow. I've run Slideshow on an iPad3 and currently on an iPad4. Unfortunately, this program is very old and has a yellowish icon with a black palm tree on the left side.
It does have a couple of quirks associated with adding additional pics to an existing slideshow, but can be done. Most iPad slideshow programs have some limitation. Good luck on finding it.

If Apple would add file names to the iPad's iPhoto pics life would be so much easier. LyleH
