So my wife asks the elderly neighbors what she can get them from the store...
Posted by: DP

Our neighbors are in their early 80s. My wife is venturing out to Aldi and asked them what they needed.

"A container of heavy cream and six bottles of Prosecco, please!"

God love them...

The 80 year old neighbors should be asking you this. They're the ones with the exclusive senior-only early morning shopping hour. So selfish.

I think that's not right. The purpose of the early shopping hours is to protect the most vulnerable. Having someone else do the shopping is even more protective.

It's not like the early hours are a special bonus; they're a means of keeping people from getting sick and dying.

I'm one of the "at risk" individuals. With my health (60 yo, immunocompromised with interstitial lung disease), I seldom wake up before 8:30 am. There's no way I can get to a store by 6 am. My husband and adult daughters (who live with us) venture forth to do the necessary shopping. I haven't left the house in ten days, since my last appointment with my pulmonologist.

One daughter works from home (thankfully). The other works two jobs--one job at the public library, which is closed to the public, but open for curbside pickup--and the other job in the produce department of the local grocery store where they have not been limiting the number of customers. My husband works for a pharmaceutical company.

What else can we do?

I asked my 80-year-old neighbor to get me six cases of baked beans and 20 packs of hot dogs.
She only brought me 2 cases of beans and 4 packs of hot dogs.
Not because the store was out of stock.
She was just too lazy to load up the little basket on her walker and make the multiple trips required up the stairs to our 4th floor apartment.
What she got me only took her 3 trips to and from the store.
And she took half the day to do it!

So selfish.

I need the calories.
I'm competing in a beach volleyball tournament this week.

I have a nephew who had a serious addiction issue that he beat (after serving several years in prison on multiple felonies, he now is asked to speak at state law enforcement conventions as a poster child for rehab). I just spoke to him yesterday, he was saying that addicts are going to be seriously dangerous in a few weeks. The ones who used to burglarize will not think twice about going to home invasions. He said there is no such thing as thinking straight when you need your fix.

he was saying that addicts are

Let's allow evidence to guide this discussion, shall we? Otherwise we're spinning into yet another game of, "What lowlifes of society might become dangerous during a crisis?," which really just serves to amp up fear and distrust of groups of people who are usually already pretty disadvantaged.

Drug users are a very diverse and complex group of people, and the VAST VAST majority of them have never committed violence in the pursuit of drugs. Some drugs can make people more likely to be violence, and desperation (of any sort, drug-related or not) is a destabilizing emotion that can make anyone unpredictable (but not necessarily violent).

People struggling with drug dependence or abuse are usually non-violent, and sometimes don't have the advantages of stable housing, employment, or social support services. These folks by and large are in greater need of help from us than we are of protection from them.

A little compassion can go a long way. Then again, there are still long lines at the gun stores if you really want to go the other direction.
