Stores and How they're dealing with Coronathreat

The stores in Chicago near my house are woefully lame in handling the shopping experience in the current sketchy climate.

Chaos..employees don't want to keep the order on the shelves..I dont blame them, they clearly aren't being managed and coached..With the crowds they are experiencing, they should be wearing masks while stocking and out on the floor-gloves too..they leave things be and these stores feel very chaotic. there are no signs of sanitizers being available to shoppers..stations etc..towelette dispensers, auto pumps..things feel extremely shaky and I plan my visits very carefully..I coat my hands with soap before i go in..rub it in let it dry in place..when im done with my transactions i wash in my car and wash my steering wheel and anything i touch in the course driving

I always have a list and i avoid traffic jams inside the store..stores always filled now..of course..no paper goods, all the useful sanitizer stuff is gone..alcohol, peroxide, ingrediants for homemade cleaners..nothing

The one bright light in the last few days was a visit to a Meijer store out of state in Michigan City Indiana..
After walking into a WalMart in same town and seeing two broken sanitizer dispensers and the same general chaotic feeling..I left and went the Meijer..Walking in, i was greeted by one of several guys managing cart distribution... he was wearing rubber gloves, big spray bottle, paper towels...he pulled a cart out for me, washed all the areas that normally get touched...top rails and handlebar..handed it off to me and then pointed out the many hand sanitizer stations scattered about..said to take four or five sanitizer sheets with me and clean as i shopped..

I cant begin to tell you how settling this was..night and day..the store was in good shape..out of paper products but felt in complete control..felt neat, managed...this is a huge thing..I felt in control. Very impressive.

In this visit i had a bunch of stuff to get - huge, huge place..asked directions quite a few times and encountered quite a few of the handicapped people they employ..all of whom were very helpful..one deaf kid who pointed to his ears and smiled at me..then took me on a walk to get some alternate help..it was very sweet. Employee attitude was excellent, top shelf. After i got home that evening i googled Meijer and read about them a bit..basically a conservative standing company..had some serious issues with not hiring gay employees at one time but turned this around very quickly and is now graded very well in terms of fair hiring practice..also known for actively hiring handicapped folks in the communities they serve and placing them carefully in positions they can handle..I witnessed this first hand and it was touching to see.

I was extremely impressed with how this situation was being run, they got me as a customer based on this visit alone..i will be going back. I had been to a Meijer once before -just running in to get some milk..didn't have the time to really feel what the place was about..have to say i was sorta blown away by this in the middle of this Corona thing...the contrast was crazy.

it's a great idea and so much more sanitary than the actual removal of gloves..which requires a strategy.

Walmart is handling this SO poorly that there should be punitive measures. Their employees have no protection whatsoever. None. And they know it.... I overheard a group of ladies stocking the floor talking about how they are probably all 'Gonna get the Corona.."

We went to Kroger yesterday. They were wiping down the carts before giving them to people.
One of the reasons I am taking a month off from work is there is basically no way to really stay safe in a big box store environment. There is no way to wash your hands enough, and everyone knows there are no masks, whether or not that would help.
I found out yesterday that my store, which is a very large store, is finally limiting the number of customers to 125 at a time, but that just started. We were crazy busy at the start of all this, so that should have happened earlier. Fewer people should now allow for social distancing but there is no way possible to make the merchandise safe to touch, and the employees have to touch it over and over every day.
I am lucky that I can take off, but I feel guilty for doing so. I have to put my husband’s and my health first though, so I am staying home.
The grocery stores are starting to install sneeze guards to protect the cashiers in the checkouts, which is great
We went to Kroger yesterday because they have self checkouts, which help a lot.

My Costco asked people that are wearing gloves to not leave them in the empty cart after shopping.

What stupid people, for leaving their life saving equipment (Gloves), for someone else to have to touch and pick up and discard.

Thoughtless

My Walmart was packed with people yesterday (Wednesday) at 2pm. There was no sanitizer made available. Carts were not sterilized. People were completely ignoring personal space. It was like Black Friday. At least the employees had gloves.

....agree.....Walmart is the worse....they don't value their employees....

.....some retailers are much better than others at handling safety measures for employees and customers........

Publix is installing cough guards at all checkouts and customer service desks They are also putting suggested standing markers on the floor that people can use to stay separated.

Update - WalMart, Winn-Dixie, Kroger, Sam's Club, ABC Wine & Liquor, and Stop & Shop are following suit and putting in the plexiglass cough barriers too.
