Anyone know which James Michener book(s) was about an orphanage?

He was in a Pennsylvania orphanage with my grandfather. He was about a year older than my grandfather. I don't read many large books, so I don't know much about his books. Someone told me there was an orphanage in "Centennial." I wonder if there is a book where the orphanage plays a big part.

Usually known for his multi-generational epics of historical fiction, The Fires of Spring was written as a partially autobiographical bildungsroman in which Michener's proxy, young orphan David Harper, searches for meaning and romance in pre-World War II Pennsylvania.

Maybe?

Thanks. That's probably it. My uncle said he had always heard there was such a book. That was his first novel and he didn't write it until around age 42.

I immediately thought of The World According to Garp, by John Irving. Don't remember the Michener book.

This has to be it. It was his first novel, so he must have had it incubating in his mind for years. Thanks for finding it.
