I thought I remember a web site or action to make old grave markers from the 1800s easier to read?

Well, you can try using Levels or Curves to increase the contrast, or fiddling with Radius adjustments in sharpening, but the best thing would be to shoot it with the light coming almost perpendicular to the stone instead of straight on it. That much degradation would be tough to overcome anyway.

I'd go to Reddit's fix-my-photo group: [www.reddit.com]

(BTW, it's spelled < y'all >.)

Didn't get much, but the B&W looks pretty cool.

I remember an article on how they were finding petroglyphs on rocks in the Southwest, that were virtually invisible to the naked eye, using a method I think that was in Photoshop. Alas, I cannot find that article.

Put a large sheet of paper on it and rub it with a graphite pencil or artists' charcoal.

I think it's what the cable companies call "Paper View".
