0600 Monday IS NOT a good time to go shopping!

Food Lion apparently wiped out by the weekend mobs and of course won't be
restocking until tonight, if the trucks show up!
Did get the canned goods & drinks I went for. And some Bryer's SmartCarb ice cream.
Paper aisle was wiped out except for small packages of Angel Soft TP and the
Scott single ply stuff.
Apparently eggs are in short supply & stores that have stock are charging premium prices.

I'll have to look for it but I saw a story about how chickens are in short supply because they're being bought to provide eggs!

Heard their hit the other day and thought, "why haven't I remembered these guys?"

I did my shopping last friday. The good news was meat and produce were both back on the shelves and plentiful. The bad news was canned soups, TP, rice, some milk brands, sugar and flour were all gone. There were three cartons of eggs with a sign that said limit of 1 so I lucked out there. The TP shortage was amusing at first but now it's just annoying to find so many things gone with no indication of when stock will be back to normal.

That's fully stocked today's standards. Lucky you!

I found it interesting to see what people wanted and didn't want.

Eggs were gone, regular soda was gone (plenty of diets and caffeine-free), soups were gone except Campbell condensed salt, rice gone, tortillas gone (but bread was plentiful), milk was low and would be gone shortly. This week there were plenty of cold cuts and cheese, fresh meat and seafood was available (interesting that meat was limited to two packages but they were putting out vacuum packed uncut slabs that would be 8-10 steaks when cut down), frozen whole meals dinners were gone but plenty of regular frozen dinners. Frozen vegetables were pretty much gone but lots of fresh produce. There was TP but no sanitizers. No canned tuna but lots of pouched tuna.

The cashiers and stockers were pretty wiped out too. I felt sorry for them and would have liked to give all of them a tip but accepting a tip is a fireable offense at Publix. I'll ask my son what associates might appreciate that they can accept either individually or as a group.

[Just outside of Little Rock AR] Several of my local grocery type stores (incl Walmart and Kroger), even before the current situation, were useless to go to sometimes on a Monday. I was told they usually got the bulk of their new stock in on Monday (daytime & overnight) and would start stocking throughout the night and morning Tuesday.

FWIW, after a month, I've not gone to any store in the region that had any toilet paper.

Paper towels have been eeking their way back onto the shelves. Bread is plentiful again.

Walgreens had some of their bottom-of-the-barrel 1-ply for "$1 per roll/limit 2 per person", though.

When to my local Safeway for milk, bread, soda, and pastry.

Except for eggs, almost everything has some representation.

A lot of canned good, but few of my favorites.

Prices were definitely higher.

The only nosale for me was a pack of eight Miller 1/4lb hotdogs was $12.00, and my second favorite, Safeway's house brand, was OOS.

There was maybe 12 of us in line so that was good. Safeway put out yellow warning stanchions every six-feet so that was orderly.

They had a guy stationed at the cart area wiping them down as the were returned.

Maybe effective or not, but a nice gesture.

There were also teeny, tiny wipes inside the store as you entered to police your cart, I imagine.

One very eerie note, and it wasn't the highly increased presences of masks, scarves, and N95s.

While shopping the muzak was regularly interrupted by a pleasant recorded female voice announce the CDC's recommendation of staying six-feet apart.

That was the dystopian cherry on the top of former civilization.

It was a very 'keepin' it real' moment for me.

Joking aside, I was thinking yesterday that the odds are that several members of this forum we all know will get this, and there is a very good chance given the demographics that we could lose someone.

That was very sobering to me for some reason - it seemed to have brought the reality home more than thinking about coworkers or even family. I guess what I am trying to say is for everyone to be careful and know that you are special to me. MRF is perhaps my favorite spot on the web (well, at least the one I can admit too secret smiley)

I've been refreshing my Costco cart for fresh foods since yesterday but there are no times available. I did get my dry goods delivered from them today. Thank god, my maple syrup was getting low...

We went to Aldi on the way home from golf. Plenty of eggs, but the price was $1.10 a dozen rather than the $.76 a dozen last week. They didn't have the particular package of sliced ham that I like but they had a couple of other versions. Plenty of sugar, flour, etc. The paper aisle was skimpy but they had quite a few packs of paper towels-no TP.

It has been at least 20 years, if not longer, since I've seen eggs for $1.10 a dozen.

Trader Joe's used to occasionally have eggs for $1.29 per dozen, but generally more like $1.59 or $1.69 per dozen.

The cheapest price I can get eggs for now is $1.99 per dozen.

Many stores now sell these "boutique" eggs for $4-5 per dozen. To heck with that idiocy.

We've noticed that some things have gotten smaller, too. Like chicken thighs and potatoes. It's as though they're being harvested sooner to get them to market, not letting them reach full size.

I was never really amused early on by the TP hoarding. Now I'm just flat out angry about it.

On another note, I had noticed prices rising sharply for some thing even before the pandemic. Milk I understand, because several big dairy companies filed for bankruptcy because milk prices were so ridiculously low.

What I don't understand is sugar. It had been $1.39 at Meijer for a 4 pound bag for quite a while (yes, 4 pound not 5 pound bags have been standard for a couple years now). It rose to $1.59, and then within two weeks jumped to $2.19 for that 4 pound bag. 10 pound bags are still more reasonable. But I don't understand why 4 pound bags almost doubled suddenly.

It's been much longer than that for me.

It's difficult to grasp that price.

I don't pay much attention, but I think it's about $3.50-$4.00+ for me.

Agreed.

To be clear, I wasn't joking.

It was meant as a sarcastic barb to the glibness I'm seeing about people becoming infected.

As more and more people die and some dire predictions are seemingly approaching fruition, the propensity for some to make jokes really, really annoys me, whether or not the deaths are C19 related.

It's just me venting a rant, in particular to the 'it really doesn't matter until it happens to my family or me' attitude.

I'm no bleeding heart, but everybody is somebody to somebody else, and it's not for me to decide they aren't.
