......the 'Native American woman' logo disappearing from packaging.....

Land O’Lakes makes over packaging, apparently retiring Indian maiden logo

.....Land O’Lakes is quietly changing its look, and the American Indian maiden on the Minnesota company’s butter and dairy packaging for nearly a century is disappearing.

Land O’Lakes President and CEO Beth Ford said in a news release that the Arden Hills-based company is repackaging its products as the company “looks toward our 100th anniversary.” The company plans to add images of their farmer-owners, “whose milk is used to produce Land O’Lakes products,” Ford said.

But the front-of-package design remains the firm’s traditional lake-and-woods theme, absent the Indian maiden. The words “Farmer-Owned” have also been made more prominent in the design.

“As a farmer-owned co-op, we strongly feel the need to better connect the men and women who grow our food with those who consume it,” Ford said. “Our farmer-to-fork structure gives us a unique ability to bridge this divide.”

A reporter contacted Land O’Lakes for additional comment, and spokeswoman Natalie Long said the packaging shift is meant to focus on the farmers behind the company’s butter, and other products. It is unclear whether the Indian maiden image will disappear completely, but the news release, which was issued in February, makes no mention of it.

Some have criticized the original logo as culturally insensitive.

The new packaging, which is already showing up in grocery stores, is being added to packaging for stick butter, tub butter spreads, food service products and deli cheese, according to the news release.

The Indian maiden, named Mia, first appeared on Land O’Lakes packaging in 1928, seven years after the Minnesota Cooperative Creameries Association was founded by 320 farmers in St. Paul. Arthur C. Hanson, who was the first illustrator for the St. Paul advertising firm Brown & Bigelow, came up with the original design evoking rural Minnesota with a blue lake, green pine trees and a Native woman in a buckskin dress and feather headdress. Kneeling, she offered a box of Land O’Lakes stick butter.

Since then, the packaging changed at least twice, once in 1939 and a second time in the 1950s, when Patrick DesJarlait, an Ojibwe artist from Minnesota, was hired to revamp the depiction, according to a student-run blog of Villanova University’s History Graduate Program. More recently, Land O’Lakes packaging emphasized a head-and-shoulders view of the Indian maiden, who was no longer obviously kneeling.

Native people have called the imagery racist, and that it goes “hand-in-hand with with human and sex trafficking of our women and girls … by depicting Native women as sex objects,” according to North Dakota state Rep. Ruth Buffalo, D-Fargo, who is a registered member of the Mandan, Hidatsa and Arikara Nation.

“Yes, it’s a good thing for the company to remove the image. … But we can’t stop there,” Buffalo said. “We as a whole need to keep pushing forward to address the underlying issues that directly impact an entire population that survived genocide.”

disappearing.....like the lands that they originally owned......?!

I've got a great idea. Instead of dumping all that milk, how about they skip the redesign and lower the price of their products?

Because cost accounting. Milk selling for $1.50 a gallon doesn't even pay the bulk transport, much less feeding the cows. Keep in mind in the northern Dairy country, it's still silage feeding season.

$ Feeding the cows.
$ Milking the cows.
$ homogenizing the milk.
$ bulk transporting the milk.
$ packaging the milk.
$ transporting the packaged milk to retail.
$ retail markup.
$$$$ Customers buy milk and consume it.

If the majority of Native Americans feel negatively towards the image then by all means I applaud this change. She's been on her knees, in a mini skirt, with lipstick on, subservient for far too long.

Just to get to the above, add the following:
$ Cost of breed-stock cows
$ Cost of breeding (bull-juice ain't free!)
$ Cost of birthing calves
$ Cost of raising calves
$ Cost of veterinary services
rinse & repeat, rinse & repeat...

And lest we forget, government and regulatory expenses: $$$$ !

Dairy farming is not for the faint of heart!

Agreed. And as logo revamps go, this one is better that 98% of the ones I’ve seen in the last few years.

It is what it is.

If that was a subservient Native American man on his knees holding a stick of butter would it have been around for 90 years? No that would've been weird. A woman on her knees? No one even blinks. Don't mind me. I'm just stirring the pot smiling smiley

It's grotesque. So glad to see it going.

Now can we PLEASE get rid of Aunt Jemima and Uncle Ben, for real?
