My mother-in-law received her direct deposit stimulus payment this week.

She died last November.

I wonder how long it will take before Treasury wants it back?

....relative tells a story......her parents were due $33.13 tax refund.....the IRS mistakenly deposited $3313......they charged that person interest even though it was the IRS mistake.......

What a mess. Huge waste of taxpayer money. How hard is it to run the list against the death registry before sending money out. Both lists use SSNs, just a simple compare and remove. Seriously, how much more incompetent could they be?

Relatives of dead Americans all over the country are receiving coronavirus relief payments from the U.S. Treasury Department on behalf of the loved ones this week. Many are confused. Was it a mistake? Are they required to send it back? Some of them have already tried to. Either way, they can rest easy.

The U.S. government plans to allow heirs or spouses of dead people to keep the money, a source familiar with the matter said. A Treasury spokesperson declined to comment but said guidance on the matter is forthcoming.

As the current administration has shown repeatedly, incompetence has no limits.

It's not going to be practical to "fix" this situation, just as it probably wasn't practical to attempt perfection, for the reason Ombligo stated.

These sorts of quickie fixes, like the small business loans/grants rushed out haphazardly, are feel-good measures that do nothing to address any underlying issues that precipitated them in the first place.

Rail on if you must, but please focus up a littler higher at systems and broader long term policies. Live and learn, rinse and repeat.

I think there are some psychological/economic value to these programs in the short run because they helped people “catch their breath” after the initial shock of the pandemic. But you are right that they don’t fix anything in the long run. I guess it’s an open question whether the cost is equal to the benefit gained.

To be fair, sending Govt money to dead people is a long standing tradition or policy of the Government, that goes back decades.

I wouldn't expect that to get fixe any decade soon.

When I check the site to see where my Stimulu is, , it says it was scheduled to be deposited on 4/15/20 to account xxxxxx. But it is not there. Maybe next Wednesday? Or maybe because we are on Social Security?

Wow. Incompetence that can’t even be bothered to fix their mistakes. All this and they have done NOTHING for first responders and essential employees. Nice to know they do more for dead people’s families than our police, fire, and nurses.

Once again, I hear people talking about essential employees, then they list the type of work they do.

I have never seen anyone mention daycare/preschool teachers. K-colleges/universities all shut down, but little ones are still being watched by underpaid, underappreciated and overlooked essential personnel. They would be making more staying home on unemployment with the $600 bonus, but they still go to work risking their lives. Hospital worker have PPEs, at least to some extent. What about my partner? She had a little kid lick her from chin to ear on Friday. How in the hell can you social distance and still change a diaper? Little ones NEED contact, love and support constantly. You don't get them on the right path in life before 6 years, their likelihood of graduating high school is in the single digits.

Masks and face shields would traumatize those little kids.
