Any bicycle people here? Seat tilt question (pics)
Posted by: tuqqer

I've got a new cheapo but awesome single speed beach bomber, a Genesis Onex 29" aluminum frame. I'm 6'8" so I immediately purchased a extra long 420mm seat post with a 27.2mm diameter. Works great, but it puts the nose of the seat up too far to be comfortable on longer rides.

I don't know much about bikes, but I was able to tilt it down as far as I could, but the nose is still way too high. Is there another seat option or another post option that would have more angle adjustment? I'm willing to replace both the seat and post to come up with a solution.

Thank you for any suggestions.

See the gear-like ridges? Loosen the bolt a bit and fidget the pieces so the seat tilts downward & re-tighten. it's a locked-gear type fitting, held snug by the bolt. You'll need to snug it very tight, possibly with a pipe for leverage.. mine always slips back if I don't.

I should've mentioned that I've got the ridges as far tilted forward as it'll let me, even though it looks like there's more room there. I even took the post off the bike after taking these pics, just to see if I could get another ridge further, but no change.

Replace the seat, and post too if necessary. You do NOT want to risk damaging the dangly bits and associated nerves, and a too-high seat nose can wreak major havoc down there.

That seems to be a screwy nonstandard seat. For almost all bike seats, if the rails are parallel to the ground then the seat is flat. It also could be that the seat tube is angled much further back on your cruiser bike than on a regular mountain bike which that seat post is probably made for. It does look that way. It would be helpful to see a picture of the old and new seat posts next to each other.

"In science it often happens that scientists say, 'You know that's a really good argument; my position is mistaken,' and then they would actually change their minds and you never hear that old view from them again. They really do it. It doesn't happen as often as it should, because scientists are human and change is sometimes painful. But it happens every day. I cannot recall the last time something like that happened in politics or religion." (1987) -- Carl Sagan

Is it just me or does the seat post look to not be in alignment with the seat tube? I don’t see a straight line there.

Firstly, ensure the seat post is inserted far enough. There should be a safety mark on it.

And yes, the angle of the post is too extreme because of the frame geometry, which is probably not sized for someone who is 6’8”. That’s why the seat can’t be made parallel to the effective flat plane. There’s only so much you can adjust for the outward bits like seats and handlebars before the frame size and/geometry become unavoidable obstacles.

I came up against something related on a road bike, one size too small ... in my case the too-short top tube meant my back was never flat because the handlebars were never out front enough. I could have maybe used a stem with deeper reach, but at that point the steering geometry would have become lazier (like a mountain bike’s).

You guys nailed it. Without going custom frame, the geometries on bikes just aren't built for super tallies. And the angled seat bracket and super tall post exacerbated that geometry.

However, given that this is just what's here, I'm still hunting around for a possible solution.

One thought is to take the aluminum 420mm post to a shop and see if they can carefully bend it so that it ends up being a little more vertical instead of following the natural back angle of the post frame. This would drop the seat nose a bit.

I'm hoping, though, that there's a seat out there that has a tilting piece under it that allows for a wider range of nose-to-seat angel adjustment. Still looking for something like that.

It appears the seat is wrong for that post angle. Try reversing the bits that fit on the seat, but I think that won't work.

Look at other manufacturers' bikes to see if there is another combination that will fit or can be made to fit. A reasonably skilled auto body shop repairman can work magic by cutting and welding, if needed.

I was going to suggest the same or similar as modelmac - spin the seat post 180º, then do the same for the seat on the seat post.

I don't know how durable that would be.

In involves a considerable bend, especially if you put the seat in the 'middle' position of ridges, to give you some adjustment.

Thereafter, the bend is subject to more pressure than any part of the stem, and I think, now more fragile especially if the stem is a tube.

And you will forever be answering questions like 'where'd you get that weird AF post', 'why is that bent' and 'how did you manage to bend that?!' every time somebody sees it.

That's no way to live.

That would be worth a try!

That hex bolt doesn't look like it's centered in the bracket so reversing it on the rails might make a difference.

Great minds think alike. I wondered that too, so I took it all apart and reversed things. It actually throws the nose angle higher, because the steep backward angle of the post.

I'm also worried that the seat post is over extended.

Either find a way to secure the seat level to the ground or get a new seat. Turning the post forward will physically work but it will be awkward due to pedal position.

You need to keep an eye out for bikes that fit you, big guy.

I think I'm going to need to go full welded custom, as others mentioned earlier, and I'm already in comm with a couple of local welders who laughed at the size of my "project" but are willing to do it. And I think the object will be to strengthen the post, then create an angle that makes it vertical.

And yeah, I may need to upgrade. This was the first bike I've had in 20 years, so I stepped into it with a cheapo, which I fricking LOVE. Love the beach bomber design, the super wide handlbars, and the giant 29" wheels. Just need to add some steel girders here and there for monster man and I should be good to go.

Looks like you found some good answers and worked it out, good deal. Something to keep in mind is that seat is super padded...which is fine if you're riding <10-15 miles or on the bike less than a few hours. If riding more (and if you like the bike, then you likely will end up riding more, eventually), then I'd suggest getting a seat with less padding, perhaps even one with a cutout (for "soft tissue") as well.

It seems counterintuitive at first, but the less padded the seat, the more comfortable you will ultimately end up being on longer rides. You want your sit bones to be resting on the seat surface. The seat only needs to be wide enough for your sit bones, not your entire butt.

There are videos about this on youtube with finding the right seat for the distance b/w your sitbones. You can determine the right size seat with just a ruler and a piece of cardboard. Youtube is a good place to start if you're interested in exploring this.

I think you should start here - [www.bikeforums.net]

That forum is for heavy riders but it looks like there's posts by tall people as well. They'll know where to look for bikes that would fit you. I'm not sure if its more expensive if you're in the fraternity of tall cyclists.

You mention welders - I hope you mean bike builders.

I think it would be worthwhile to do this - [www.competitivecyclist.com] - yes, you'll feel a bit funny if you do it the right way but you'll know what size bike to look for. I'm 5'10" but have long legs and a short torso - most guides would put me on a large bike but I ride a small - Frame size is determined more by torso than leg length.

Ok, so that seat and it's hardware can't be make to work properly with that post.

So what's the problem: either the seat or the post or both are some odd, nonstandard pieces of hardware.

The length and angle of the post move the seat back, but that should affect the angle of the seat.

It might make for an uncomfortable reach to the bars, but that would/will make it apparent quickly.

So there must be a seat/post combo that allow for the seat to be angled properly for you.

If not, which seems unlikely, I'd look to fabbing a new mount for the seat and not welding up the post.

But that's all moot if by going full welded custom you mean having a builder make a bespoke frame.

old style saddles have the clamp instead of the clamp being part of the seat post. like this one

Then you can use one of the old-style, inexpensive posts with the necked down end and have as much tilt adjustment as much as you like.
