Really Dumb iMovie '09 Question

Making a bike safety video for kids. Importing several vertical videos to assemble/edit a total of ~ 7 minute video... shot from my iPhone on iOS 12...I've already xferred it to my '10 MBP via Google Drive, onto El Cap, in iMovie '09, v. 8.0.6. Challenge: the clips are displaying as squished - short and wide. How to fix so they look like they do in the raw iPhone video?

The google told me to hit File-->Project Properties and change aspect ratio there, but nothing changed in my actual iMovie Preview window - video still looks squished.

Any advice is appreciated. I may have some other q's later, it's been several years since I messed around with iMovie. I tried Adobe Spark (they have a free 2-month trial now) and it wouldn't even let me upload...Adobe says it's compatible with iPhone .mov files...but apparently it isn't. Requires conversion. Thanks, Adobe.

Any other whiz bang online easy video editors suggestions, if easier than iMovie I'm all ears on that, too. Just need to string these together and add a few supers/transitions/logos. Thanks.

Handbrake should be able to convert it to a compatible format.
