iOS photo import adds 1.5mb to each photo-true?

Forbes article linked below suggests a software bloat using Image Capture, iOS devices and a desktop Mac when you transfer images.

I wonder if this is true?

And if so, is this a Catalina problem?

“If you connect an iPhone or iPad to your Mac, and use Image Capture to transfer the photos you took with the device to the Mac, you have the option to convert the HEIC photos taken by iOS to more standard JPG files. This requires you to uncheck the "Keep Originals" option in the settings for that iOS device, as shown here.
"Apples Image Capture will then happily convert the HEIF files to JPG format for you, when they are copied to your Mac. But what is also does is to add more than 1.5 MB of totally empty data to every single photo file it creates!”

Stay well.

Exactly!

I think this is a real issue when dealing with thousands of images as we all do.

The linked Forbes article suggests 2k images adds 1.5gb of empty space.

2k images in the digital world is nothing!

I am wondering how much bloat is already in my Photos Library.

I am hesitant to add to it.

Ugh.

Stay well.

The iPhone (and iPad) shoot large jpgs, and HEIC files are compressed more than jpgs, so it doesn't surprise me that converting the latter to the from means an increased file size.

In the 'Phone's Settings, change the format to Most Compatible and it'll be jpg.

Pictures should than be saved as jpgs.

Check the file size and quality against HEIC pics.

Check the file size and quality of HEIC pics converted to jpeg.

If their the same, great.

Then see if you can reduce the size of the converted jpgs down to bite size.

You can avoid all this by saving pics as jpgs in the first place.

But then you defeat the advantage of HEIC.

I think most or at least some of the above is correct.

Zero?

Unless you are soecifically using Image Capture to import your photos into Photos and are unchecking "keep originals".

Otherwise...

The linked Forbes article suggests 2k images adds 1.5gb of empty space.

How does 1.5 MB x 2000 = 1.5 GB? Numbers seem off.

More on the bloat issue from the developer of NeoFinder.

I use Photo Transfer App to move images off my iDevices.
