It is a common misconception that flyovers cost taxpayers extra. They do not cost anything that wasn't going to paid anyway. Pilots are required to fly a minimum number of hours every month for training purposes. Flyovers help fulfill those hours; pilots would have been flying someplace in any case (usually over open desert or water).
So the flyovers allow the public to see these training flights that would have otherwise been unobserved.

The same can't be said for Blue Angles.

Right. The Blue “Angles” are what? Isosceles?
You are speaking of two different groups from two different armed forces. Both require the best of their respective aviators, and it is highly competitive to stay in them. For those who don’t know, and it seems that some here may not, the Thunderbirds are Air Force, and the Blue Angels are Navy, as in those who fly off aircraft carriers. How can you tell the difference, apart from the aircraft, the uniform or the markings on the plane? Watch them land. Those who hit the runway a bit further down are not those who serve on the carriers. Of the two groups, I’d rather see the Angels. But that’s my own opinion.
And yes, they also need practice to stay in top shape.
