Your tax dollars at waste...should have been used as hazard pay for nurses, PCTs and other hospital staff that don't make enough to go through this particular life.

It is a common misconception that flyovers cost taxpayers extra. They do not cost anything that wasn't going to paid anyway. Pilots are required to fly a minimum number of hours every month for training purposes. Flyovers help fulfill those hours; pilots would have been flying someplace in any case (usually over open desert or water).

So the flyovers allow the public to see these training flights that would have otherwise been unobserved.

The same can't be said for Blue Angles.

They flew over many of the hospitals in Atlanta yesterday. As great as it was to see them (they flew by my office twice), it as not good to see all the people crowded in parking lots (including of the hospitals), not practicing social distancing, and not wearing any face masks. I fear this flyover will just serve to drum up more business for the healthcare workers they were intended to honor in the weeks to come.

The Blue Angels are flying training flights? For what-being Blue Angels?

Right. The Blue “Angles” are what? Isosceles?

You are speaking of two different groups from two different armed forces. Both require the best of their respective aviators, and it is highly competitive to stay in them. For those who don’t know, and it seems that some here may not, the Thunderbirds are Air Force, and the Blue Angels are Navy, as in those who fly off aircraft carriers. How can you tell the difference, apart from the aircraft, the uniform or the markings on the plane? Watch them land. Those who hit the runway a bit further down are not those who serve on the carriers. Of the two groups, I’d rather see the Angels. But that’s my own opinion.

And yes, they also need practice to stay in top shape.

For being Naval Aviators.

The Navy requires all pilots to average 20 hrs per month of flight time, but fighter pilots are expected to average more while land-based.
The USAF requires pilots to have 17 hrs of flight time per month.

You know, even if it was a waste of money, I'd be happy to see it. Our government wastes so much money that letting us see something that's pretty cool, even if a "waste," is worth it to me.

Having said that, my first impression was that it's a cool way to do required practice flights while we get to enjoy it.

Imagine thinking you can fly like that and never have to train, you just jump in on air show day. Sheesh.

It's hilarious to hear talk about the relative expense of demonstration pilots perform public flyover, as though the very existence of two demonstration groups of military aircraft and pilots itself poses no questions.

The Blue Angels fly over SF for 3 days every year. Not being a nervous pet owner or someone suffering from PTSD, I don't pay them much mind besides the screaming noise. I can't, however, put out of my mind the fact that there are several air show accidents every year and that if one of these planes or pilots ever malfunctioned and flew into downtown SF, that would pretty much end the spectacle for good - along with many lives.
