I stumbled across this blog today, with 15 pages of witty and breezy trips down memory lane for us Baby Boomers. Yes, most of us geezers could have written these reminiscences—but we didn't.

Oh, man! I got about halfway through and kept saying "Yeah, I had that!" or just as often "Yeah, I wanted that!". Lots of fond memories for us old(er) farts. Thanks.

OK, I scanned the headlines of the entire site. Very cool! The narrative was a little heavy on boomer wisdom, but perhaps that's the point. About half were my time (well, elementary time at least), half were prime a decade or two before me, yet I recognized nearly all.

“Bell Bottoms...This fashion statement came straight from the good old U.S. Navy. Supposedly, the reasoning behind them was that the flared opening made the trousers easier to jettison in case you fell overboard. Then, they could be filled with air to make a life preserver.”

Nope. They were easier to roll up and keep dry when sailors went barefoot to swab the decks, and weren’t unique to the US Navy.

Not a boomer but I remember those things. Riding in the rear package shelf —- the game my sister and I played was “roll down baby.” One of us would crawl up there and then tumble down on top of the other. Probably going down I-44 also. Must have been something in that MO water.

Oh, that Heathkit catalog. I never had the cash for any of them, so I had to figure it out myself... my infamous crystal radio that had a loop antenna that wound around my ceiling and could pick up those Mexican pirate radio stations at night...

Dad had a ham receiver that I wasn't allowed to use, so instead I tried to build my own. Finally did in 8th grade Radio afterschool activity... an aluminum box with a greenlee punch, wires, and a bunch of tubes. I had a receiver and then I built a transmitter. Worked on my license and learned Morse, but could not afford the fees. I did enjoy climbing the 30 meter high antenna at school and throwing water balloons at people I hated.

.....X-ray specs gave pubescent boys, so much joy........

Just realized, I have used a TV Tray for most of my life in one form or another.

Johnson Smith Co. was the first mail order I made as a kid. I couldn't BELIEVE all of the cool stuff in their catalog!

I think the only reason we don’t have them is because the sofa sits too low and back to make use ... I can’t make this crowd sit at a table together.

Still have a few Heathkit items around, including a Morse Code training kit. Never worked with it enough to become proficient though.

The Heath Kit and LRE catalogs were my favorite.

Built a few Kits, ordered a couple of time from LRE (before it was LRE).

Allied Electronics got some money from me with their excellent Knight-Kits.

A decent scan of that shows I'm way, way too familiar with all of the early stuff except the Dumont Network and Tiger Tonic.

Dude is light on the Westerns though. There were lot more than he listed.

All the later stuff is a given.

And there was the win $5 in the Find Your Name contest in the Olson Electronics tabloids.

Most of their stuff wasn't worth any price.

Well maybe it was more Army Surplus.

There was a great place Army/Navy surplus place called Robert's Surplus in Alameda CA.

My dad and I could spend hours there. They had TONS of NIB military surplus.

Heathkit and Edmund Scientific were the two big ones in my house. Father purchased one of Heathkit's color TV kits in the '60s and assembled it over a period of a couple months. That was our TV for the next decade or so. I learned some soldering skills helping with the assembly.

I used to look at the parts in Edmund's catalog, was thinking about assembling my own telescope. Just did not have the space to set up and money enough at the time.

I still have a Heath Kit CB radio, I cut slots in the front panel and installed the sockets for the crystals. I had to change the crystals when ever I wanted to change channels. Big horse teeth crystals.
