I bought a rowing machine today.

I had been thinking about getting a rowing machine for a long time, but then I went back to work and didn’t really have time or need one, as I got a lot of exercise at work.
Anyway, with the stay at home still going on, and me not being sure if I will actually go back to work, I decided to take the plunge.
I looked at all the different styles, boy there are a lot of options, and decided that I liked the water rower the best. I liked that this one was very clean and simple, all wood, basically, and it was actually made in the USA, RI, I think.
I found a local vendor that had one that I liked and they had a demo that I could try. They were allowing only one person in the store at a time, so it was just me and the guy who worked there.
One of the other things I liked about this one was that it came in enough pieces that I could carry it up to the third floor without killing myself. My husband has messed his back up, so no one to help. sad smiley
I got it together and have filled the tank. I have given it a test run, but I haven’t looked at how the monitor thing works. I will wait till I am better rested before I try to figure it out. Lol
Anyway, I hope that I can get into some sort of daily routine thumbs up

Nice. Hearty congratulations!

Had a chance to demo one of those in a shop a year or so ago. I was impressed. Had I not already owned a Concept II ...

The Concept IIs are pretty much not available right now.
I had looked at those a long time ago and thought they looked really nice.
This one takes up a little less space than the C2, but it is also lower to the ground, which makes getting on/off a little harder.
I like the swish sound of the water. I think once I get used to it, it will be a good way to audibly tell if I am being consistent.

Hold up. THIRD floor?!!?!? I thought you folks downsized when you moved? smiley-laughing001

Maybe that house should have an elevator, or maybe someone from your staff could haul it for you. j/k :-)

Looks like a nice piece of equipment. Let us know what it's like after a few miles of rowing.

Geeeze, you should have called me.

I would have been happy to help.

I could have given you all that emotional support to get you up the stairs.

Kept your spirits up.

I have a Concept 2. Maybe we could start a competition or somehow motivate each other.

Ha ha. We have a tall but sort of skinny townhouse now. The extra floor on top takes the place of not having a basement. Having that extra space has been a godsend during the quarantine. There are times it is good to have that place to escape to. I cannot watch reruns of golf, like my husband. grinning smiley
It actually does have closets that can be converted to an elevator. They were going after the old people demo, to future proof the place. We probably should have gone for that upgrade. Lol

I had a combo rowing/weight machine years ago. It ended up being a clothes rack in my bedroom til I got rid of it.

We got my daughter a Concept 2, she's on her high school's rowing team. I briefly looked at the water rower, but it was more expensive than the Concept 2, plus the Concept 2 is what most rowing clubs and teams use. We also found a used model for a lot less money, it looked brand new. My daughter has taught me how to use it, and now I am also slowly getting in some workouts.
Proper technique is the main thing to keep in mind. Concept 2 has a section of their web site devoted to training, there's a video on how to properly row.

Rowing is about 60% legs, 30% core and 10% arms.

I have had a concept II rower for about 20 years (and have rowed closed to 10 million meters on it), but haven't been rowing recently for a variety of reasons. I will just say two things about technique as you are starting up.

First, don't strap your feet down as you row. This is probably not what the instructions say or what seems obvious, but you will be better off and will use much better technique rowing "strapless". Rowing strapless will force you to stay balanced, so the force you put into the handle will be the force that keeps you upright. This is much safer in terms of stress on your back and other muscle groups and basically insures that you will be rowing close to correctly (meaning, if you can't row strapless comfortably you are almost certainly doing something wrong).

Second, Sam3's animation is pretty good, but there are so many subtle aspects of the motion one key is to only focus on a few things (and hope the rest falls into place). The key to that image is that the handle travels in a smooth path and stays horizontal. So at no time does the handle pause or rise up, say over your knees (many on the water rowers will drop the handle lower after the completing the stroke, so it travels back lower than you pull it by an inch or so). The path for the handle should be like a smooth mirror image: slower as you start the drive accelerating to the body, then fast off the body and then smooth as your recover and start the next stroke.

So no crashing into either of the end of the stroke (but rowing strapless will 100% guarantee that you won't finish the stroke out of control into your body).

Enjoy.

Thanks for all the tips.
I did watch those C2 videos yesterday. They were very helpful.
I will try the strapless rowing. I did notice myself doing an arc with the strap once, and I corrected. The video also mentioned not to arch the strap over your knees.
When I practiced yesterday, for the first time, I tried to go slowly and get the feel of the right way to do it. I think I got the general form right, but I will have to watch myself till I get better at it
If a C2 had been readily available I may well have gotten one, but since they weren’t I had to spend a little more and get the water rower. It being a little easier to transport upstairs, also helped with the choice, but it was mostly availability.

Update.
A ten minute row is a workout for me.
My goal is to use the machine once a day for the next month, since I am off till 6/15.
Yesterday I did two ten minute rows, once in the morning and once later in the day.
I think the tip about keeping my strap level was such a help. I also am not using the foot straps to make myself balance on my own. So far the balance hasn’t been a problem.

Thanks again for all the responses, they were very helpful. Fingers crossed I stay with this. It seems to give my upper body and core the extra help that just walking didn’t.
