a local house of worship has an event in september.

since they are located in nyc, there is a great probably that this worship service will not have attendees (or limited attendees) at this event.

a friend asked me to get involved (since i'm a media guy!).

but i have no experience in live streaming.

anyone care to offer up their experiences?

Speaking from viewpoint of protestant Christian here. Facebook seems to be commonly used, probably because so many people use Facebook. Check out some churches on Sunday to see what they're doing.

Another possibility is pre-recording, which will surely give you higher quality and more control. That's what we've been doing for the past couple of months. For worship, I've seen some groups do the collaborative music video thing. We haven't done that, but my friend's worship team pulls it off and they're not pros. With pre-recording, you release the video at a specified time and ask people to join.

For live communion together, we've used Zoom a couple of times.

Yes, Zoom is certainly low quality. Works OK for communion and small groups, but time lag and other factors make it difficult for other events.

Must it be "live"? As noted in my first post, our members have said thanks for preparing a high quality recording. Since they watch from their own homes, whether another member is participating at that moment has no bearing on their experience.

Also, what will they be doing during the worship event? For music, you need to project words to sing along with, which is usually poorly done with the live events I've seen. With speaking, you usually need to show slides of scriptures and/or key points. When I've watched a live event with the screen behind the worship or speaker, the low quality has bordered on annoying.

I'm no expert. So hope to learn as well.

Our "Life Group" (think Sunday School class) is/was doing Facebook live. We were having church service at 9:30 am and LG @ 11:00 am. I would put the lesson (think teacher) of the LG on Facebook live at 11:00 for those that couldn't come that Sunday.

The advantage of FB is after you finish, you can post it to FB, and members can look at it anytime thereafter. Our group is mainly an older class so we have a lot of absences due to health.

I do it from my iPhone with a tripod (horizontal).

Of course, since the lockdown, just 3 of us do it from an office.

Our Temple uses both Facebook live and Youtube Live. Both are streamed. I like FB because folks comment along the side. We split the screen into 4 parts, 3 are of our Rabbi, 2 singers all 3 broadcasting from home. The fourth box is for a scrolling text of the prayers and poems. It's quite nice.

The church I attended last summer is doing live services via facebook. It works but I find the interface confusing and it is incredibly difficult to find past recordings. But it does work.

The church I normally attend is doing youtube live. Their first week was rough but it has been excellent since then. The mistake they made was trying to upload the video live in 1080 from the speakers house and their upstream data rate wasn't adequate. Once they matched the broadcast quality to the available bandwidth it has been very smooth. For bible studies we are using Zoom which is great for participation.

Youtube can take up to 4K streaming (at least they used to before recent events that increased demand). The GIGANTROUS problem with them is you need to do it a dozen or so times to get the hang of it, and be current on any "dashboard" changes they like to force down peoples throats at the last minute.

That is pretty much the same advice with any other service. Whoever will be the technical master behind it will need to have experience doing it ahead of time. It isn't something you can just pop up and do, at least not without paying several thousand dollars for consultants.

There are other choices, but I don't know if many churches use Twitch or Microsoft Mixer (the latter prefers content creators that have lots of daily subscribers tuning in to see ads).

And if you don't want it wide open (as in, findable by anyone browsing youtube or even subscribed to your channel), you do have the ability to keep things unlisted, which can be nice.
