Critters under porch, need some advice

We have an older salt box style house and added a wrap around porch about 20 years ago. My wife noticed some “chittering” noised coming from under the porch next to the back door. We have no easy access to open this area up. There are places where a small animal could burrow in and live under there. This has probably happened before without our knowledge.

Here is where it gets a bit complicated. My neighbor across the street said her dog killed a raccoon about 3 days ago. I am hoping this is not a litter left by that raccoon. I would apparently have to hire someone to move them and don’t know what the odds are to do that successfully.

Anyone have any experience with moving a litter? I have read up on annoying raccoons With smells, sound and light but need to get a better idea of the situation. I can dig a passage near the noise and try to check it out. I might try to find a cheap go pro or video cable to push up under the porch.

Any thoughts appreciated.

Hire a pro. Odds are you have raccoon family not paying rent.

You need to contact your nearest wildlife rescue. They can advise you.

I checked on line for local pro’s and the only 2 listed are one star. I will check with our county’s wildlife authorities for recommendations. Also, the DNR has a pdf listing statewide contacts. There is actually a skunk rescue center! There is a raccoon center listed 50 miles away but they may have suggestions. If the mother is still around I may try to annoy them using sounds, light, odor. I need to determine if these critters have a mother

Absolutely. I like your GoPro idea. You might try to find any egress points and monitor them for tracks, or use a trail cam. If there are raccoon kits, it might be possible to bait them out and get a look at them. Might be squirrels or chipmunks?

Had good luck in our garage attic with a family of raccoons. I donned a respirator with charcoal for odor absorbtion, soaked rags in ammonia, and used our tree trimmer pole to push the rags into the corners and main areas of the attic while glowing eyes watched me. 10 rags in all. Three days later they were gone and I had to do cleanup and entry exclusion with welded ¼" wire (not chicken wire). No problems since.

FWIW I've used mothballs to convince a family of skunks to move to a better place. From under a deck, and under a shed. I think they moved under my neighbor's shed, which is a win, because those neighbors annoy us. devil smiley

I am going to try to dig under the lathe of the porch to check it out. I also found a fiber optic cable on line if that doesn’t work so I can check out what is going on under there. I will report back

I tried a 2 prong approach Per inter web advice. Experts say raccoons are greatly annoyed by the human voice. I set up a radio and am using NPR Radio 24/7 with speaker aimed at current location. I would have used our local Fox affiliate but was afraid they would arm themselves and head for the state capitol.

Also crushed moth balls and scattered about 1/4 cup of this “dust” between the porch floor boards.
Newton, do you have any idea how many moths it takes to get that much dust? A LOT as they are very tiny. Fingers crossed.

An endless loop of Howard Stern radio shows would likely be much more effective.

It is what it is.
