Nope! Our phones were hardwired in and I don't remember anything else until the plug-in types appeared. Maybe I'm too young...

Yes. I replaced them all with RJ-11 jacks in our house when I was about 11. Phone wiring... Daisy chain from heck. Then people decided the RJ-11 jack looked like an RJ-45 and why can't they run ethernet there ? I mean, you can, but only if its not daisy chained everywhere else in the house. Which they were. And coax networks ? I have about 500' of RG-59 in the basement...

My sister and I shared a teenage telephone number and we had one phone with that kind of plug and a jack in each bedroom. If you got a call and the phone was in the other room, you could answer, pull the plug and run like hell for your own room and plug it in. I think you had maybe 10 seconds to plug in or the phone call dropped and you’d have dial it again!!

Not so much faded away as deliberately replaced by the RJ14 standard. I think the Bell System had already developed these in the early 1970s as cheaper than the clunky 404 plugs, but they quickly became ubiquitous once the FCC required the Bell Family to allow privately owned equipment to be connected to the network. That meant a standard interface had to be specified, so by 1977 you could buy them at Radio Shack.

We only had one phone in the house, kitchen wall w/5' cord, so no need for it. teenage privacy meant whispering until Mom said to speak up.

I never had the 4 pin plugs in a house/apartment but I knew what the photo was of (but not the official name). Properly wired RJ-11 phone jacks would carry PhoneNet/AppleTalk signals.

My Dad upgraded a couple of plugs in our house with RJ-11 plugs to allow movement of the upstairs phone into bedrooms when people where home sick.

Sure, they did.

We had them in a couple of houses, and eventually I bought some RJ-14 to 4-prong adapters so I could use newer kit.

I also remember party lines, and in one place the other party was always on the phone.

My dad wired the house (and phones) with 1/4" phono jacks. He always worried about "the phone company" coming in and inspecting, and fining him for more phones than on our bill. He figured the phono jacks could be explained away as speaker extensions, if they came in.

They never did come...

Hal, they were less common in General Telephone territories, such as LA Westside/Santa Monica, Indianapolis, Honolulu. And if you never asked (and paid) for one, having only the one phone in the downstairs hall, for instance, it would have been hardwired into one of those round-cornered brown Bakelite junction boxes.
