This video is sort of a SGN video for me, but with squirrels.

Never underestimate the rodent! (I should know... smiling bouncing smiley )

But seriously, is there any question why mammals have become the dominant species on this planet? The ability to learn, adapt, adjust, plasticity of behavior, has a lot of advantages...

The squirrel video was fun, but of more [nostalgic] interest to me was the promo piece for kiwico at the end. It reminded me of the 'Things of Science' kits I used to get in the mail each month, you know, back in the day. That's right — I'm old. Well, not that old — 59 tomorrow.

How come the squirrels are only able to climb the one pole?

Indeed, squirrels are intelligent. And prolific gnawers. Every wooden bird feeder I have had was gnawed to bits, as were the wooden arms of lawn chairs. All my bird feeders now are entirely metal, with spring-loaded covers over the seed holes to block squirrel access. Additionally, you know those aluminum tie wires that hold chain link fences to their steel posts and rails? Most have been gnawed into little hanging bits-o-wire. Whole lengths of fence have tilted into my yard at one time or another before I found time to put on new ties. Apparently aluminum is not very toxic to squirrels, and probably satisfies their need to wear down their teeth.

That's what I thought too; he and the squirrels certainly made it an entertaining (and educational!) 20+ minutes.

Squirrels are amazing generalists.

Over the past couple months I've conducted a rigorous scientific study of the neighborhood squirrels. I believe I have uncovered a universal truth as a result.

Squirrels spend all their time screwing around.
