.....no longer able to 'ignore'......if you update to the latest updates.....

Apple Making It Harder to Avoid Nagging macOS Update Notifications

.....With the release of macOS Catalina 10.15.5 and related security updates for macOS Mojave and High Sierra earlier this week, Apple is making it more difficult for users to ignore available software updates and remain on their current operating system versions.

Included in the release notes for macOS Catalina 10.15.5 is the following:

- Major new releases of macOS are no longer hidden when using the softwareupdate(8) command with the --ignore flag

This change also affects macOS Mojave and macOS High Sierra after installing Security Update 2020-003.

For users still running an earlier major macOS version like Mojave or High Sierra, the Software Update pane in System Preferences typically displays a prominent upgrade button for Catalina and a notification badge on the System Preferences icon in the Dock, but until now knowledgeable users have been able to hide those items by using the softwareupdate --ignore "macOS Catalina" command in the Terminal app.

After updating to macOS 10.15.5 or Security Update 2020-003, this command no longer works, with Terminal displaying the following message:

Ignoring software updates is deprecated.
The ability to ignore individual updates will be removed in a future release of macOS.

As documented in a discussion thread in our forums, there are some additional commands that can be used to temporarily remove the notifications, but it's clear Apple wants as many users as possible to upgrade their Macs with all of the most recent operating system updates.

another reason not to upgrade.........?!

This is ridiculous. My wife has a MacBook running Mojave as it is her CS3 machine (32bit apps). She DESPISES the constant warnings/prompts to upgrade to Catalina, and turning off this flag was on the weekend docket.

So the choices are to 1) Ignore security updates or 2) live with perpetual Apple Mac OS update spam.

Great job, Tim Cook.

Updating very often causes applications that you rely on to break when you are trying to make a living. How many developers are slow to catch up due to either their own poor update releases (hello Adobe, hello Avid) or other perfectly understandable reasons?

How in the world did we get into this adversarial position with Apple? It used to be Apple produced products so we could all get work done. Now it almost seems like they are inviting us to try a different platform. In the end I want to spend my time getting things done and not fighting Apple's attempts to control everything.

Removing OSXNotification.bundle from /Library/Bundles used to used to kill the “Upgrade to our newest OS” banners. Does this no longer work?

I’m on Sierra and have never seen a nag for Catalina or Mojave.

Amen to that. I have exactly one bootable drive with High Sierra on it. Everything else is on Sierra. with a few running Mavericks and one running Snow Leopard, and they and will stay there. I loathe the way Apple is handling "upgrades".

ka jowct, I'm just not really sure how to move forward. I've been on OSX so long I really don't look forward to learning a new OS or finding all new programs. For now I think I'll just keep on running High Sierra (virtual El Capitan) for as long as I can.

That's about where I am. I figure I can move to High Sierra if I absolutely have to, but I need for stuff to "just work". What Apple is doing under the guise of improving security is just too restrictive for me.

As long as I can keep Firefox up to date, I am not too worried about browsing: and I tend to visit the same few locations, anyway, with no weird excursions into ad-filled quagmires.

Nope.

The notification bundle isn't even installed with Mojave or Catalina.

Adminning workstations when you have end-users who click and agree to every update/notification/alert without reading or understanding what they're doing just got substantially harder.

Hard to tell if this is purposeful or careless but it hardly matters.

I absolutely believe this to be the case.

Apple may be doing this 'for our own good' to insure we have the latest security dates available.

But it also allows Apple to say 'XX.x% of our users have upgraded to the latest version...'

I don't know that's a motive, but at the very least it's a perk of a stat.

True, they aren't.

They just try to annoy the hell out of you until you do.

The vast majority of OSX/macOS users have no idea what Terminal is or how to use it, and would/will never do the workaround to suppress the badges and reminders.

I don't know if the 15.5.5 thing is a glitch or deliberate, so my torch remains unlit and in the corner along with the pitchfork.

A lot of people have a solid OS version working for them, and don't want to upgrade without a good reason to do so. Getting rid of nags isn't a good reason.
