Mike Bombich (CCC creator) says that 10.15.5 breaks their ability to create bootable backups

The developer of popular Mac utility Carbon Copy Cloner says that either macOS 10.15.5 has a bug that prevents the creation of bootable backups, or Apple has made a ‘reprehensible’ security decision …

Mike Bombich described the problem in a blog post.

The technical details of the bug are laid out below, but the short version is that we’re no longer able to use our own file copier to establish an initial bootable backup of a macOS Catalina System volume.

apple.... stop it!

Is there a workaround? Is CCC still useful?

We have a workaround and we've released a new beta (it's in beta while we wait for translations). To be clear, you can update all backups created in 10.15.4 and below and they will remain bootable, even if you upgrade to 10.15.5. If you use the beta of CCC, you can create a brand-new bootable 10.15.5 with it.

I’m guessing that SuperDuper! is also seeing this issue, will check it out later and report.

I'm still on 10.15.2 with no problems and no thought of updating in the near future. Several developers of software I depend on have all posted having problems after Apple's updates for Catalina. And CCC works perfectly for me at 10.5.2.

Are you sure about that?

Because I think I've heard otherwise.

Not quite, hal.

I think Mike said that they can't continue to use their existing method but they have found a workaround. Also, only new bootable backups are affected.

Can you fix your headline?
