What is LiDAR (a guess on iPhone 12)

Wife needs better video camera so I'm thinking of waiting for the fall-2020 iPhone 12 that may come out, and in looking at TomsGuide, his best guesses are that the specs on the Pro will include something called LiDAR. Google says it's largely a way to enhance distance and measurement. But how does that show up in real pic or video improvement. Does anyone have first-hand experience in seeing how it improves things?

Here's Tom's current guesses as what's coming up:

Mac mini (M1 2020, 16G 2T) Big Sur 11.x Dual 25" Acer 1440p LCDs11" i5 MacBook Air

I make lidar for self-driving cars. you shoot a short laser pulse at an object and measure the delay until light comes back. That gives you distance.

my guess: iPhone will measure distance to subject and determine what kind of scene it is and adjust various paraments to enhance image quality. for example, they could detect this is a portrait scene based on distance/shape of the subject and adjust exposure, F/number, etc to optimize image quality. they could also take various images with different F number and/or focus distances and blend those images into the original image to enhance Bokeh and make image appear to have a shallower DOF than it would normally have for such a small sensor. again those are my guesses. I have no connection with Apple.

Also it's spelled lidar, not LiDAR.

EDIT: forgot about AR

LIDAR is a way to use lasers to make a 3D mesh map of an area. It’s been used for years in Military, mapping, construction, archeology, and various other technology applications. Autonomous driving is a big one currently, with Tesla being the lone holdout, instead pushing AI and visual interpretation (networked computers interpreting inputs from cameras). I won’t say tesla is right or wrong but it seems odd that so many other contenders ALL arrived at LIDAR as a key piece of the puzzle. The emitter spins on top of the vehicle and sweeps a 360° area creating a map, the cameras try to overlay the images on the 3D map and make sense out of what is happening 8n near real time.

While it may aid in photos--it is likely for Augmented Reality (AR)

LIDAR is used on the iPad Pro for depth sensing to improve photography and AR.

I don't doubt it will serve the same purposes on an iPhone, when it happens.
