What the heck is this on my bag of mulch? Animal, mineral, or vegetable???
Is it a rare exotic truffle that is highly sought after for its aphrodisiac properties?

It looks like a moldy meatball or something. An egg sack? Mold? Mushroom?

I think it might be a preying mantis chrysalis.
I have seen them on plants before.
You sometimes see them on live Xmas trees.

If not PM, then some other insect.

It's giving me the heebie jeebies. I guess praying mantises are good. But if it's something else. I don't think I want it hatching 10ft from the house... I could've sworn it wasn't there yesterday. That was FAST.

You can cut it off the bag and either throw it away, far from the house, or put it in a jar with a lid, with a few very, very small holes and maybe a layer of cloth, and see what, if anything, hatches.

Yeah. I'll cut it from the bag and chuck it in the far corner of my back yard. I hear praying mantises are good luck and everyone needs all the good karma we can get nowadays. Hah. I just planted a baby crepe myrtle shrub in the back and need to use some mulch anyway. If it's something else,,, nature can take over

A live Christmas wreath that we hung in our bathroom (you'll have to ask HER why) turned out to be loaded with praying mantis which hatched. LOTS of them hatched. I wish I could have rounded them up and taken them outside, but there were way too many of them and they probably would not have lasted long in the December cold.
