FU: Airlines are still getting hammered

Previous thread: [forums.macresource.com]

1 week later and have heard radio silence from Delta. No call, no ermail, no text message, nothing. They never even sent a message that the itinerary changed, I found that out myself when I looked to check on the flights.

Still not able to get through to an agent despite 6 days straight of calling. Filled out their online refund request 3 times, twice just in case the first one didn't go through. Third time because of no response after 5 business days. They can't even send out an automated message with a case number?

I just canceled the flights myself on their website and they said they will process a e-credit if I qualify. Which is not what I want, they canceled my flight out and rebooked it on another day without asking and I want a refund.

I get the feeling they are going out of business and that eCredit is going to be worthless. Businesses everywhere are opening back up, if they still don't have their act together it isn't likely going to happen. Stupid me booked it with my bank card instead of a credit card, never had a problem with Delta before and wasn't expecting this kind of disruption.

I'd do a chargeback if you put the flight on a credit card.

That's a great idea Michael. If I recall, the "merchant" must reply within x days to the card's issuing bank, or the charge back sticks. Pretty sure that is universal banking law.

I'd do a chargeback if you put the flight on a credit card.

I believe you can do that within 60 days of the initial charge (or something like that, there IS a time limit). I the ticket was bought more than 60 days ago, I don't know what one can do.

Also it is unclear to me if the bank eats the loss or if they get the money back from the merchant.

However, as the op stated, he used a debit card. No do-overs, no chargebacks.

My debit card also functions as a credit card. Maybe there's some recourse.

You mean it bleeds off your checking account until it’s empty then converts to a credit card until the next deposit? Hadn’t heard of one of those.

Airlines are taking a long time to make refunds. A Delta cancellation I did in March took two weeks to hit my credit card. A JetBlue cancellation I did last week was accepted, but they said it may take 30 days for the refund to hit my credit card.

So, the watchword is patience.

No. I can use it a a credit card when the situation doesn't accept debit. When I use it at a store, I'll be asked if I want to use it as credit or debit. I usually tell them whatever's easiest since funds are coming from the same source.

Think the airlines are bad? I’m $3k into Carnival for a cruise refund that they cancelled in March. We’ve gotten the money back for the shore excursions, the prepaid gratuity and the internet plan, but the money for the cruise itself Is taking its own sweet time.

Debit cards are subject to chargebacks/disputes but they aren't required by the feds. Banks have to investigate and may do a chargeback but it's apparently left to the goodwill of the bank. I was successful the one time I tried it. One of the issues seems to be whether the card was run as a debit card (with a pin) or as a credit card (no pin used so it was run on the credit card system). If it was run on the credit card system the banks apparently have to follow the credit card issuer rules.

Here's some info: [www.creditcards.com]

I've been reading about lots of problems. We had a Baltic cruise with Viking that was cancelled and they offered 125% of the amount paid toward another cruise within 2 years or a refund. We rebooked for late August and the 125% more than paid for the trip and extra excursions as well as prepaid gratuities. But, that has now been cancelled so we rebooked for a year from August. The 125% carried forward and they added an extra $1000 of shipboard credit. I'm not sure how we'll spend the money but I imagine we'll figure it out. The friends who were going with us decided to get a refund and it took until mid-May to get it all back. We're pretty happy with Viking about how they've dealt with it.

Can happily report that Alaska Air refund in May for a trip to Sitka that was planned for next week took about five minutes on the phone and the credit showed up a week later. Doesn't help in this case, but I do hope that Alaska Air survives, as they're better than most domestic carriers (not perfect, but better).

It's still a debit. It's just processed without your PIN as a "signature-transaction." (Since Visa and Mastercard waive the signature requirement for most transactions nowadays, it's a bit of a misnomer.)

The main difference for the consumer is that cash back is only an option with a PIN transaction.
