About 20 years ago, I watched Season 1 sporadically, then started to lose track, and it seemed to get weird.

Season 1 pretty good-ish. S2-4 OK, but goes down hill. A totally different story arc than S1. At some point they are just calling it in. The dialog drifts to one liners - kind of fun to guess what the next line is.

Season 5 is a different show and definitely not worth it.

The only reason why you guys didn’t get 6 and 7 and why Season 5 got funky at the end, is halfway through Season 5 of Andromeda, which was owned by a Tribune company out of Chicago, went bankrupt. Because #1 they owned Chicago Tribune and The LA Times, and well, no one’s reading papers anymore, and they owned the Chicago cubs when they sucked. The radio stations were dying out, so they went into bankruptcy. The only thing making money for them were really just their 3 TV shows. They had us, Beastmaster and Mutant X. They had to freeze all their assets. Otherwise, we would have gotten 7 years out of it for sure...

But there's more to it.

By the end of season 2, the showrunners had left after conflicts with the studio and personality-conflicts with Kevin Sorbo.

Sorbo's production company took over and they suck. By various accounts I've heard, as time went on and budget-cuts hit and talent fled, they couldn't do much in the way of special effects for space-battles so they grounded the crew. They didn't know how to do a space-opera, so they started pulling from old "Hercules" stories. They were under instructions to minimize continuity from one show to the next so that new viewers could jump in more easily in syndication and they interpreted that to mean "throw away the plot."

And at some point Sorbo had a health scare, maybe a "minor" heart attack. So his activity level was seriously curtailed.

I concur, though I would take the "-ish" off season 1, I thought it was straight-up good.

That all explains why Mutant X tanked at the same time.

Yes ... to add to what others have said ... Robert Hewitt Wolfe helped develop the series from Roddenberry's original notes, then left after Season 2, which is (in my opinion) why the series tanked from Season 2 onward. Season 1 was really the only decent one, so far as I'm concerned... it's sad to think what that show could have been, had he not left. There were some truly excellent plots/writing in Season 1.

That matches my memory. I liked (and am liking) the character development and storyline in Season 1, but was hoping that my failure to bond with later seasons was due to missing too many episodes.

I found that the plots beyond season 2 became largely incomprehensible, for the reasons mentioned above... each episode was supposed to stand on its own, which meant (amongst other things) that there was little or no continuity. Also, it became more or less a Sorbo-fest, with visually every episode Sorbo playing Hercules or even himself, rather than his actual role.

What could have been. Season 5 is like it was written by monkeys on an acid trip who hated plots, continuity, and the show's fans. It is a dumpster fire, much like the political side of this forum. Really, it is that bad.
