10GB 2nd generation still humming 24/7 (except during winter months) in my workshop in the old stone schoolhouse. The original battery still holds for 5 hours when I checked it last summer.

Also rotate a pair of shuffles when I cut grass for several hours. Upgraded to a pair of Bose over the ear headphones that are fairly decent. Better than the buds that come with the shuffles.

I have a few:
  • iPod Photo (Gen 4) - 60 GB original capacity, upgraded to 400GB via SD card upgrade. Used to listen to my entire music collection in Apple Lossless format in my car.
  • iPod mini, Gen 6 (16 GB) - Used for exercise activities.
  • iPod mini, Gen 2 (8 GB) - My travel iPod.
The Classic got a new battery at the same time I performed the SD card upgrade. The other two are still going strong on their original batteries.

It is what it is.

We have I think a 3rd gen iPod touch (was going to be e-wasted along with an iPhone 5s and iPhone 6!) that we use for audiobooks on long trips. The 5S and the 6 are our kids' iPhones now. What's with people e-wasting decent tech?

I’ve got a 1st gen iPod and an 8GB 2nd gen Nano, both still working. My old company used to make the iPod wheel clicker and I was lucky to be given a number of Apple products from them over the years.

I keep my iPods Nano, 4g and 6g in my car, but I honestly rarely use them

pRICE,

I use an iPod Nano for music in my car for music. I'd use my iPhone for music via bluetooth but my car doesn't support the feature. Bluetooth for phone calls but nothing else. The iPod is hardwired to the AUX-in port. I use an audio filter with it. Works like a champ. I looked at alternatives since I could use a player with more storage but nothing looked like it would do the job as well. SO, I just rotate music on and off it as necessary. Even had a new battery installed in the old ipod last year for about $35. Worth every penny! I wish I could upgrade the storage but it isn't feasible in the Nano.

The irony is that I have two old iphones and an iPod Touch that could serve the same purpose but they don't work as well as the Nano. They have touchscreens which require more visual work on my part to navigate. The ipod has buttons and a touchwheel. I don't need to look at it to skip songs. The ipod will retired once I replace the car with a newer model that supports Carplay.

Of the six members of my family who I've purchased an iPod for over the years, none use them anymore. I was the last, I used an iPod shuffle at the gym.

We have a few of them in the house, but it would be best if they went to e-waste so that when their batteries fail, they do not make a chemical waste spill.

I have a fourth gen, 60GB iPod Photo that seems to be dead. I have already tried the various scenarios on Apple's website without success. The MBP it was backed up to is also dead (I might have said data on a Time Machine somewhere). I would like to at least be able to get my music off the HDD and, am thinking of cracking the iPod open to see what, if anything, I can salvage. If I could "rebuild" it with an SSD and a new battery I would. I could then connect it to my RV's infotainment system to listen to oldies when it's safe to hit the road again.

I've got a few also, the oldest being the original 5G iPod, and the newest being the 80G classic.

All but the Classic need batteries, and I'd like to make the Classic an SSD (solid state device).

Lulz, I still have mine too, with a battery replacement. And I have another battery in the wrapper around her somewhere but I've read unused Li-ion batteries (even new ones) do not age well so I assume that's also useless.

I have a TBolt-FW adapter so I can still charge it from my 2014 Mini but I haven't tried to do so it at least 5 years.

Have a 4th generation 40 GB iPod, still works as a drive so I hope once I replace the battery the click wheel controls will work again. Still plan on converting it to use CompactFlash if the controls work with a fresh battery.

SD is preferable to CF for this type of upgrade.

No more. About a year ago we sold a Classic and 3 Shuffle's on eBay. I don't remember what my wife got for them but I do remember being satisfied with them going to new users and out of our drawer. We had shifted to an iPhone 4s for music through our stereo and flash drives in the vehicles. We now are using our new SE's 2020's for all of it now so the 4s will eventually go.

Just added the following albums to my Vehicular Jukebox Listening Device:
  • Heatwave - Too Hot To Handle
  • Rolling Stones - Some Girls (Deluxe Edition)
  • Rolling Stones - Sticky Fingers (Deluxe Edition)
Brings me to 15,505 songs on the iPod, the vast majority in glorious Apple Lossless sound.

vision63, if you're listening you'll appreciate this: My mind was blown -- BLOWN! -- recently when I learned that the same Rod Temperton who wrote a number of Michael Jackson's hits from Off The Wall and Thriller....

....was the keyboardist for Heatwave and wrote "Always And Forever."

Neither of the OWC upgrades works for 4th Generation iPods or older as the drive connection changed to a ZIF connector from an EIDE connector.

Until recently the only adapters to install flash memory to a 4th generation or older iPods converted to CompactFlash. Using SD cards required use of an additional adapter with issues of space and an additional connection that could cause problems.

Will have to look further on that flash.xyz site, but the first possible adapter to use SD was out of stock.

Basically - the drive cable uses a ZIF connector for Gen 5 and later iPods, Gen 4 and earlier use an EIDE connector.

It looks like they added an adapter to SD Card that goes directly from EIDE to SD Card for 4th Gen iPods - [www.iflash.xyz]. Before that you needed to use this adapter - [www.iflash.xyz] - and one of their other iFlash adapters.

They don't recommend the iFlash-ATA1 for use in 3rd Gen iPods because it will put too much strain on the drive cable. The converter cable approach is recommended instead.

Related to this, who sell good replacement batteries for 4th Gen iPods? OWC stopped selling them a while ago, just sell them for newer iPod models.

I'll consider doing the SD upgrade for my Classic.

There's still a FW iMac (G5) and a FW mini I can use to charge them.

Does it look like this - [en.wikipedia.org]

or this - [en.wikipedia.org]

All of the iPods in the "Classic" design used the same 30-pin dock connector. Starting with the 3rd Gen USB could be used for transferring data, not charging, and Firewire was used for charging and data. With the 4th Gen USB or Firewire could be used for both, and both cables were included in the box for those going to use it with a PC. With the 5th Gen iPod and all later ones, Firewire could only be used for charging, and as I recall the Firewire cable was not included.

If you do not have a little rectangular port right next to the headphone jack for a remote control, then it is a 5th generation iPod.
