What happened to Credit Card Services?

I used to get several calls a day from these conmen. Not anymore, now I get them from Car Warranty Specialists.

Saint Cloud, Minnesota, where the weather is wonderful even when it isn't.

The Car Warrantee people check in with us daily. So nice to have someone who cares. The Fraternal Order of Police are quite punctual, too, though I keep warning the gravelly-voiced gentleman that all the smoking is unhealthy. The choose-your-electric-supplier people, on the other hand, only call every other day, ungrateful jerks.

Maybe the FTC was actually successful. This page is from 2015.

I used to hear from Heather, don't recall getting calls from Rachel.

What’s the deal with “Rachel from Card Services”? Your top 3 questions answered.

August 21, 2015
by Bikram Bandy
Do Not Call Program Coordinator, FTC

Have you heard this message?

“Hi, this is Rachel from Card Services calling about your credit card account. It appears that you are now eligible for a significantly lower interest rate on your account. However, this offer is about to expire, so please press 1 now to be transferred to a live representative who can assist you in securing your lower interest rate.”

Rachel and her cohorts — Anne, Tiffany, Michael, Heather and others — from “Card Services” have been annoying people for years with their illegal robocalls. And the FTC is working hard to stop them — both bringing cases and hosting competitions to develop robocall-blocking technology. So, what’s the deal with these calls, and why won’t they stop? We’ve got answers to your top 3 questions.

1. Why does “Card Services” keep calling me?

The FTC has shut down more than a dozen of these “Card Services” companies — including one this past June and yet another in July. But there are lots of other companies, and new ones pop up often. Lots of boiler rooms in the U.S. and overseas use the exact same recorded message by Rachel and friends, running a scam to — supposedly — reduce your credit card interest rate. An active operation can make millions of calls — so that’s why Rachel is still calling you.

I’m still getting calls about virus protection for my father’s PC, who has been dead over a year. Good luck on charging $300 on his credit card fellas!

Still getting calls from them every so often, they have moved on to a new recording and no more Rachel. Though it might be a new one calling themselves Credit Card Services.

There should be an appropriate way for the victims of these calls to waste the time of the live scammers who eventually have to pick up the phone in order to steal your credit card information. If we all cooperated with them long enough to waste a minute of their time, would that make their business untenable?

They will have your phone number and the ability to make your life a living hell. Go ahead and screw with them if you like.

Next time one calls, simply set the handset down and walk away.

It is what it is.

I may be throwing pebbles at boulders, but every time I get a spam call, I block the number it came from.

Or maybe the number is phony, too?

Gee, I'm old enough to remember the promise the Goobermint made that when they created the National Do Not Call list that it would forever solve all the problems we were having with SPAM calls like this.

I just block any caller who isn't in my Contacts and doesn't leave a valid non-spammy, non-marketing message on their first call. And my garbage recycle container is on the path between my mailbox and my back door, so SPAM snail-mail gets quickly recycled too.

I'm still getting offers, too good to pass up, on cleaning my air ducts and extending the warranty on my vehicle.

I have neither ductwork nor vehicle.

Gawd, you must feel so inadequate. Next you’ll be telling us you have no gutters that need guarding.

These days it usually is spoofed, Caller ID has become next to worthless. People have even received calls from a number that was a family member's that was spam or scam.
