I'm looking to replace the treads on the stairs from our front and back porch. I assume pine or other white wood is fine. Is there any reason to get something special, like oak, which will cost about 5x to 8x more?

Treated southern yellow pine would be OK. Or see if there is a small mill around you that has oak.

Cedar would be great if you are in a region that produces it, otherwise the cost of shipping makes it less attractive.

You might want to consider something that doesn't get slick when wet or icy if you are subject to those conditions and need to use the steps or porch for access during those weather conditions. Wood can get pretty slick.

I was able to replace just the treads on the steps to my shed. HD had them already pressure treated. Unscrewed the old steps, screwed on the new. I think they're pine. The last set lasted about 8 years or so before needing to be replaced.

I had a small floating deck in the backyard made 5 years ago. The pressure treated wood has grayed. The Trex top looks brand new.

For a small job, I'd go with Trex. Costs more but not exorbitant for smaller jobs. You put it in and never worry about it again. I couldn't afford to pay for a large deck of it though.

Pressure-treated pine will give you 5-10 years depending on location and whether you reseal it every year or two.
