deal breakers: gas, self-cleaning

prefer: convection, black, bottom storage drawer

Price: less than $800

Brands to want or avoid? Lowes has a number of Samsungs on sale.

I am not big on cooking but i do want something that reliably works which my current unit fails at and i don’t want to put any more money or effort into it.

sorry, no knowledge on sub-$4,500 electric ranges.... pretty much all of 'em under $2.5-$3K are lacking something as far as real cooking goes. Since you said cooking isn't that important, you should be able to find something. Look at legit reviews, and buy on sale. Thankfully, appliances are on sale more often that most other items. Friends and rels have scored decent >$3K ranges for <$2K. BIL/SIL got $3,300 unit for $1,800 with convection that SIL (and her mom) likes. I think BIL was hoping for <$800, too, but he just eats, and doesn't cook. Good luck.

Samsmug and LG make phones, TVs and other CE.
They make junk appliances. Ask any appliance repair person.

I've had excellent results with Whirlpool and whoever else re-badges them.
KitchenAid, Maytag, Jenn-Air are most common (kenmore once upon a time). But they are also badged by other depending on the appliance.

You get what you pay for. If you don't mind short life span appliances, LG & Samsmung. YMMD.

Our fridge is a Thermdor badged Whirlpool. It's 12yo. We just had the entire sealed system redone. Parts were free.

Our W/D is 15yo Kenmore pair. I just replaced the gas solenoid myself. $12.
DW is a 12yo Whirlpool. I've replaced the grinder twice. $6. The latch plate once $3.

Oven is 12yo Thermador but I don't know if it is Whirlpool built.
Main PCB off ebay $75 at about 8yo.

Cooktop is Heartland/AGA Canadian now French owned.
It took some time, but it has been very steady for 11 years

what’s induction and why do you like it?

Induction uses electromagnetism to heat the cooking container & the food within.
Only the pan & food get hot, not the cooktop. It's really fast and the temperature
is regulated by electronics not thermostats or guess work.
However, you have to use cookware made with ferrous metals. Cast iron and
certain stainless alloys. Some stainless is a clad, with a disc of steel encased in
stainless on the bottom, but it's not expensive. No aluminum, glass, or ceramic will work.

Good luck finding a range that does not include self-cleaning. Almost as tough as finding a refrigerator that does not have an ice maker or dispenser.

She doesn't *have* to use it, and if she can find someone handy enough with appliances, maybe she can have it disabled.
Self-cleaning should only be allowed for outdoor appliances.

my first use of the self-cleaning feature on an oven changed my life. there are actually a number of models that don’t have it having spent the evening on lowes and home depot. hadn’t heard the fumes were toxic. can’t be any more toxic than the clouds of easy off i inhaled growing up and tasked with cleaning the oven to no where near as pristine condition as self cleaning achieves.

it’s a deal breaker for an oven purchase for me. maybe my pup and i will have an afternoon at the park the next time i use it.

Dealbreaker meaning it must run on gas and be self cleaning or it must not be gas and not have self cleaning?

I’m guessing you mean the former and people are reading it as the latter.

Then you use the exhaust fan on your range hood, and open a window. Maybe even use the timer so you aren't home. Or turn it on and leave.

Hi everyone,

A couple things. Many ranges on the market - typically lower end models - do not have the self-cleaning feature at all. Some have a variation of it that isn’t true self-cleaning. Some have actual self-cleaning features. I won’t buy an oven that lacks a true self-cleaning oven..

As for brands, my wife and I and my parents have LG washers and dryers. Rock solid and trouble-free for nearly twelve years. Both have Samsung ranges. The one we have is gas and self-cleaning and is two or three years old. I’d have to pull up the order to get the actual date. Either way, no issues at all. My parents have had their range for just over a year. Gas and self-cleaning, no issues.

The bigger complaint about Samsung and LG is they have fewer factory authorized repair people than other brands. that could create a problem in the event an appliance requires servicing. Could is the operative word. I buy appliances from a more local chain which also services everything it sells.

Other people might say to avoid GE appliances. We ignored that recommendation in our old apartment. Installed a GE Profile fridge in 2008/2009. The apartment has changed owners multiple times and the fridge is still there, working perfectly. I know because we are friendly with our next door neighbor.

If the design of the kitchen allows, I prefer a slide-in range or a freestanding model that looks like a slide-in model. Location of the controls is key. I want them all towards the front of the range. That way, for timers and such, I’m not reaching across burners. Definitely think about the features and design aspects. It makes a big difference and could prove worth the extra bucks to get them.

To Graylocks, look at the reviews and see which model offers the overall best reliability and the features you want for the buck. Consumer Reports is your best starting point. Look elsewhere after that. FWIW, self-cleaning is a must in my experience. Makes cleaning the range much much easier.

Like others said, I'm confused about your deal-breaker's meaning, so if you meant no-gas then stop reading.

I have a Samsung gas convection range with self-cleaning (Model #NX58M5600SW). It has not given us any issues in the two years we have owned it. I admit that Samsung has appliance issues, particularly with newer refrigerators, but ranges are not that complicated.

There are some design issues that may or may not be a concern to the user. My biggest complaint seems trivial until you deal it with it for a while - then it becomes a royal PITA. The burner grates and gas burner covers are textured making them magnets for carbon buildup. then because of the texture, they become very difficult to clean. They also have rubber feet, so you cant put them in the oven while running the self-cleaning mode.

The center griddle burner is under-powered while the simmer burner is over-powered.

The bottom storage drawer works but is not well connected. it is like a cheap dresser drawer that wants to fall out rather than pull out.

We are light users of it with the bulk of our cooking being either instant pot, sous vide, or countertop oven. So many of the complaints other users have may just not be showing up yet. The biggest concern I see in recent reviews is Samsung not giving warranty service, which was not reported when we bought ours but would give me pause now.

I got it on sale for about $500, so I won't complain. There are others I liked better, but I wasn't going to spend $1000+

Got a great deal on it. Turns out it was in September 2018. We have a 10-year warranty on it through PC Richard, the store from whom we purchased it.

Can't really compare it to yours since I think it's a different class of range. I can say, though, we've not had any issues with it. Not even the drawer issue you described with your model.

FWIW, I always get the extended warranties on more expensive items. Places like Consumer Reports may say nay but, unfortunately, they've proven worthwhile on enough occasions that it's worth the bucks for the reassurance. It's why my Apple products have Applecare and why my Mazda had its extended warranty.

In the case of appliances, Buy it from PC Richard (where we bought ours) and buy their extended warranty and they'll handle the servicing.
